  • F1 drops cigarette ads

    Apr 17, 2008 5:08 PM

Formula One has stubbed out cigarette logos once and for all, after Ferrari and Philip Morris agreed to run Marlboro ‘barcodes’ on their F2008s instead of the tobacco brand’s normal logo.
F1 has been trying to get the nicotine out of its system for several years. McLaren, Renault (née Benetton) and Honda (née BAR) have all found alternative sources of sponsorship income and dropped the tobacco branding accordingly.
Ferrari has a deal with Philip Morris that runs through to 2011 and is wort...Read the full article

This articles headline "F1 drops cigarette ads" is not exactly (at all) accurate as the white on red barcodes still represent the Marlboro brand and will be identified as such by viewers. So in this zero sum (and zero achievement) political game we have anti-smoking puritans 1 step forward, sponsors still get Marlboro money so 1 step closer to the bank and Marlboro still get brand recognition and stay one step ahead.

Maybe these dance steps will be out on Nintendo DS by Christmas! call it 'The Nothing Dance - Going Round in Circles'.

    Shouldn't this be in Motorsport?

...'T'is too much proved, that with devotions visage and pious action, we do sugar o'er the devil himself...

Not before time that F1 gave up it's addiction, even though Ferrari will still carry sponsorship in code (poor show by them).   Perhaps it will finally pave the way for larger international brands to support F1 the way other sports have been.   Coke-a-cola or Pepsi may now be tempted to support a "Clean" global brand.   Pizza hut or Dominos.   McDonalds or Burger King.   There are so many brands that could support F1.

Now all we need to do is get a Nazi fantasist* away from running motorsport to finally give it the clean image it needs.

    * I've seen the video on the internet of Max Mosley speaking and teaching German, the fake German accents and what looks to me to be a SS uniform worn by one of the women involved.

Yes indeed. We could add Nicotine replacement chewing gum sponsors to F1 which has no State controls and is sold over the counter to children... nothing stopping them taking up an addictive habit at 12 years old with a blind eye from government because they fund so much of the 'health' propoganda about cigerettes.

I haven't seen the Max-Power video but by all accounts the uniform was a prison officer and the German accents were voice overs!

Either way, as Max stated across the front of a newspaper (Mail or Express) today his private life is his own and nobodies business. Quit right too.

Voice overs? Mad Max has already said that one of the 'girls' was German and that's why he was speaking German.

    Ya - ich bin cumming.

    Are you for real?

Then there's a perfectly good reason to be speaking German!
