    What is it?

Our first steer in BMW’s new ‘SUV coupe’, the X6. The current political climate makes this an unpropitious time to be launching a car like this, with massive levies for cars that produce more CO2 than a diesel supermini on the horizon and the SUV being the subject of derision among the chattering classes.

But BMW isn’t apologising for the X6. It’s a car that’s been designed for the American market, where big still equates to better, but there’s no doubting it’s ...Read the full article

Some nice phrases in the report:

    • "subject of derision among the chattering classes".  Fairly dismissive I thought.

    • "towering road presence" & "incredibly imposing, even intimidating". Yep, I can just imagine these flying behind me on the motorway at 95+ using that particular feature.
    • "coupe-inspired styling and handling". Well, hardly.

I dare say it will sell by the bucketload, but I don't think I'll ever understand the attraction of cars like these (then again, I suppose I'm not the object of BMW's marketing department).  If can anyone can put their finger on it, I'd love to hear!

Your second bullet point point perhaps?

Are you saying people would spend £50k just to wind-up "the chattering classes"?  Never thought that would be the reason!

Clearly I need to read my own posts more carefully!  My reply should have been:

Neil, is the attraction then the good driving position the size affords, or the intimidation it produces?

I'm sorry, but this "car" (Truck is more like it...) is simply HIDEOUS.

I agree. Couldn't decide between a RR Sport and a new X5; X6 seems like a better option than either. Bet it can't go off road tho! Autocar, when you test drive the 3.0d, take it through some mud too!

    Cheers

i dont see the point of this car myself, but it will no doubt sell very well. If you want a sports car, buy a sports car! Its not like its going to be that practical, especially compared to other big 4x4s.

So, do you think BMW will make a coupe version of an MPV and do what renault failed??

If you're moving from a coupe or even 4 door saloon because your kids have arrived then the X6 seems the perfect answer to the 'need space but don't want a friggin brick' equation. The size of the rear seats is bang on for anything from babies to teenagers.

Some people don't believe in CO2 and global warming so they don't give a fig for what other people on the high street or school run think. It is none of their business and never has been. And I respect those views immensely.

Am I alone in not getting the whole 'got a baby, need a big car' thing? Unless I've missed something, babies are small.

    NiallOswald:

You are right, they start out small, but require rather alot of things taking along, prams, seats, feeds, nappies, spare clothes. The list is endless, but in reality you don't need a big car.

Look at it this way, when I was a nipper (born in 67), child seats were not in existence, so baby would go on the back seat in a cot! prams did not fold up and so wheels and chassis would go in boot of car (albeit, mainly estates), nappies were not petite pampers but bloody great terry toweling. Babies change bag with spare clothes, feeds etc. resembled that of Sherper Tensings back pack. Add in that cars (Whilst being estates) were smaller and people managed. Also add in that there was me and my brother, mum and dad all packed up in a Hillman Avenger estate. No problem.

Now, it's true that cars have grown in size since I was born and baby clobber has shrunk or can be shrunk to fit in car boots. Tell me why people need bigger cars?

Therefore, Niall your question is a valid one.
