Please help - do I repair and sell, or break and sell?

    Mar 30, 2008 10:45 PM

Hi everyone, i'm a newbie here.

I've just aquired a 1995 Saab 900s for peanuts, knowing that it needs a lot of work.

The head Gasket has gone, it may have a cracked head too - I don't know yet.

Anyway, my question is:- Should I repair it and try and make profit on it when i sell it? Or shall I strip it, sell the bits and then sell the shell for scrap?

I paid £50 for it and i'm hoping to at least double my money!

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't do any of the above.  I would put it on Ebay, declare everything wrong with it and start the bidding at £50.  I bet it makes several hundred.

    Bang on SpecB.

The only reason I would bother to do anything with it is if the rest of the car is in perfect condition.  The issue you have is the 900 isn't a massively loved car - and don't get me wrong I like it but the trade don't view it as massively desirable.

If you have the time and are going to do the work yourself, then possibly, yeah do it.

Actually Spec B has it spot on really...though cars in bits always make more money than complete ones, or find a specialist Saab breaker who might double your money and take the  heap away.

PRODIGY since you've bought the car for a dirt cheap price, why don't you try and get it back in working condition? Its very, very soothing and rewarding to see a freak car that was destined for scrap, rebound back on the road with personal efforts( and of course money) put in.

I am not sure about the economics and the costs of the head/head gasket. Maybe within the engine you'll find more fault and hence may have to spend more. That should all be calculated when you work out the resale value later on and whether the efforts and the money are worth a try?

Yes Saab is not a much in demand car as my friends have put it.
