  • Wrong-way pensioner closes motorway

    Mar 29, 2008 5:33 AM

A pensioner has caused chaos on a Lancashire motorway after driving down the wrong side of the M65 for 15 miles – and past seven junctions.
Martha Harwood drove at 40mph on her way home from a friend’s house. The 81-year old grandmother, puzzled by a new road layout, had driven up the exit slip road of junction six.
Four people required hospital treatment as the oncoming traffic swerved to avoid Mrs Harwood’s Suzuki Ignis. One person had to be cut free after the car they were in struck ...Read the full article

Someone tell Granny 50mph is the minimum speed limit on a motorway, not 40mph, even if she is going the wrong way!

The Police need to establish whether Grannies eyesite is up to scratch or was it, as she claims, new and poorly redesigned road markings that are to blame.

I hope all the doubters in the 'Auto-Bahn' topic who think it's the highest speeders that are the most dangerous read this. The most dangerous drivers are the slowest. Can the Government, which ignores the fact that 99% of motorway accidents aren't speedsters, roll out a factually accurate 'THINK' campaign that instead of preeching nonesense about 'Speed Kills' tells the truth (for once) and states "Switch On - Sloppy Driving Is Dangerous".

JJB - do you mean to say that you would knowingly storm the wrond way down a motorway at 50 mph. Read the article - she was looking for a place to turn round, but was so shaken she missed four junctions.

Seren - that comment was strictly tongue in cheek. I feel for her, at the time and the after-math must have been frieghtening and the other drivers effected!

More turgidness from the King of such things.

The most dangerous drivers are those who who drive up the road the wrong way. It's got nothing to do with speed - 40mph - 50mph - 60mph - it matters not.

It's all about human factors and regardless of what you are doing - it's all the other buggers around you that you have no control over that are the problem.

    FACT.

Poor woman she, wants to get around, give over 60s free public transport after 08.30 in the UK, reduce congestion, accidents and improve their quality of life.

"Poor thing", "feel sorry for her", quite possibly. But this highlights that that things need to change not only at the new learner stage but also in retesting OAP's.

It's not like driving in yester year granny.

Caeser ruled with an iron hand, then with a wooden foot and finally with a piece of string.

Please tell me what exactly her speed had to do with her dangerous driving and how this is relevant to the other post?

SpecB - Speed has nothing to do with dangerous driving. I've been making this point for months and have repeated the point 100's of times. It's not how fast you drive that makes an accident in 99% of cases. It's how stupidly or thoughtlesly you or someone else drives that causes an accident or many other factors - oil on road, road surface, alchahol, drugs, brake or tyre failure or as Granny claimed unclear or new road signs.

As far as I can see, you have not answered the question as I asked it - you would make a great politician.

I agree her speed has nothing to do with her dangerous driving (you pointed out that she should have been doing at least 50mph) but I do not agree that speed has nothing to do with dangerous driving - we have debated on this point long and hard and I really don't want to go there again.

What is the connection with the other topic?
