  • Audi A7 revealed

    Jul 26, 2010 9:09 PM

This is the car that Audi hopes will take sales from Mercedes-Benz’s CLS and continue the Ingolstadt firm’s evolution of its ‘big car’ design: the new A7 Sportback.

The A7 Sportback is designed to fill a niche between the A6 and A8. It offers big-car interior packaging for four people, the practicality of a rear hatch, a sizeable boot and what Audi calls a ‘four-door coupé’ shape.

Note to Mercedes and Jaguar: That is how you do it. Very clean and elegant, although lacking in drama. Now if the RS7 is coming as promised, that will be brilliant.

Even uglier than a 240Z? So are most cars. The 240Z was a classic beauty.

Speaking of old Datsuns, something that took me right back yesterday - was down in West Sussex and I saw a 1984 B-reg Datsun Laurel in baby-sick gold, with a brown plastic interior and fabric trim that looked suspiciously like the fabric they use to make golfer's trousers... a sort of tweedy check. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Still, the car was in pristine but unrestored condition...

Oh, and what's the betting that pop-up rear spoiler - thank you, Lamborghini, says Mr Audi - hides a Skoda Superb/BMW 5GT-type split tailgate arrangement?

no. standard Panamera, Rapide type tailgate, although those struts are different to the usuals. guess didn't entertain BMW's clean, but centre of gravity-raising torson bar arrangement as on the new 5-series Touring tailgate.

John (McIlroy), I know you've done your best to make the rear look abysmally cramped, in bestest, notoriousest Autocar stylee, but do you really think people will fall (again) for the front seat pushed way back, steering wheel telescoped all the way out, 'look at me in the cramped rear' schtick that A/car pulled off with the Audi A8 road test report?

your driving positon from the photo of you sat in the front shows you sat too far back: your arms would have to be almost straight out to reach the top of the steering wheel - at full extended position - and to reach the gear selector. if you admit that this is how it worked, re. the photos of you in the front and rear seats, I promise I won't bring up the matter of who ate all the pies? deal?

reference the implied chronic lack of rear seat space suggested by your photo, this from a rival publication:

'Inside, designers have created a spacious and luxurious four-seat cabin. The real revelation though is space in the rear, we sat next to another journalist who was six foot two inches tall and he still had several inches of head room to spare - quite an achievement when you consider the plunging roofline.' - doesn't chime in with your photo, John.

Audi A[insert number here] revealed .

Honestly, is this the A7 or the A5 or new A3 coupe?

In itself, it's probably a decent car, with a decent interior and a reasonable engine choice. It will probably will not ride as well as Mercedes and not have the driver's feel of the BMW.

I'm not suggesting Audi is a bad brand, far from it. But they currently all look too samey. They're lacking character. The exceptions being the TT and R8 in my view.

Audi: it's just getting a little bit boring.

Clarkson can sleep soundly tonight if this is the best of the Autocar usual suspects' similes.

not another boring look alike why can't manufacturers employ someone to design rather than copy at 0.75 scale or 1.2 scale and the Audi Brand is not up with Jaguar and Bmw with reliability and satisfaction. The interiors  that we are preached to be the very best quality look crap and copied from a Vauxall Cresta from the 1970's. accept that the smaller models hold their value for some reason but used to do the accounts for an AudiVW sales some years ago and was not impressed with the level of warranty work.even JD power slags off the lacklustre dealer performance.looked at a Q5 recently and certainly is not to the standards of a Volvo XC60 for example.
