The ‘Gordon England’ sunshine saloon derivative of the Austin Seven is not, in fact, a true Austin in the sense that it represents the car at its best value for money expended. The extra accessories and more elaborate body cost more, and it is just a question whether the extra cost is worth it. Read the full article

My late Grandfather talked very highly of the Austin Seven (Ruby, specifically IIRC).  Good job this reviews wasn't in the dreaded WhatCar? They would - as they invariably are - have been mortified by the "low rent plastics" (Bakerlite?) used in the lower door trims...

That is true. When did we become so obsessed with the quality of plastics as an indicator of automotive worth? I often think of the Peugeot 205 GT that I owned in my early 20s. I loved it, and it had a dashboard made out of the same plastic that is used for margarine cartons. Made no difference.

I miss this style of writing in the Autocar of today!

But why only one Austin review available? I'm sure Autocar has many in its archives - let's see more. The same goes for all the defunct British (and other) marques.

Quite refreshing to read a road test that doesn't go on about styling and image, i-pod connections, or turn-in understeer! And the car itself isn't so hopeless. It seats four within an overall length of 2.6 metres (not even a Toyota iQ can do that) and weighs just 440kg, around one third of that of a modern small car. Plus the actual CO2 emissions (calculated from its quoted fuel consumption) works out at just 130 gm/km which, dare I say it, is actually better than the real world figures of most modern cars. Kind of makes you question just how much actual progress car design has made in the last 80 years, though I must admit that I wouldn't want to travel far, or have an accident in it.

Nice, but the 26" Thin Spoked Alloys are a somewhat bling are they not, Jeeves?

Oh god, have I clicked on 'classic car' by mistake. Between this and the Abt tuned Golf nonsense you aren't having a good day Autocar.

If you haven't driven a particular car don't say you have just to prove a point. It doesn't fool anybody and is bloody annoying.
