  • VW to launch Polo R

    May 04, 2010 12:09 AM

Volkswagen plans to launch an R version of the Polo in 2012, Autocar sources have revealed.

The creation of VW's R division was formally announced last month and the subsidiary was behind the Golf and Scirocco R models that went on-sale earlier this year. The division is VW's answer to Mercedes' AMG and BMW's M departments.

The VW Polo R is expected to be powered by a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine, which is tipped to produce around 210bhp. However, unlike the Golf R, the Polo R wil...Read the full article

i was expecting a 210bhp polo R, even though some said it was ruled out. but i thought it would be using the 1.4 tsi tuned up. interesting but also makes sence that a 1.6 turbo will be introduced, as that also fits into the new era of motorsport which is centered around the 1.6 turbo petrol engine, for rallying etc., 2013 formula 1 cars and maybe touring cars further down the line.

this makes me consider this new 1.6 tsi  210bhp polo R engine to be the next new lighter golf gti engine. surely it will be. and will also be seen in many other models audi/seat/skoda etc.

ibiza cupra R should also be getting this 210bhp 1.6 too.

Wow, a 210HP Polo.  It's official, the Polo is the new Golf.

What's the curb weight of the Polo these days?  I remember throwing a Lupo GTi around Anglesey race track against a MK5 GTi and at the time there wasn't a vast amount of time between the two -  I really hope that VW can make this a fun driver's car whilst not making it astronomically expensive.

This is a classic Autocar article full of errors. There is no Polo R planned, and if there was one it most certainly would not be powered by a 1.6 engine, that statement is laughable.

Also I think you will find the PQ25 does support 4-wheel-drive, that was one of the main improvements of this platform over the PQ24. "The new small-car platform architecture includes an all-wheel drive option," Erich Schmitt, president of Seat said

As a loyal long term reader of Autocar, I ask you to please stop with the constant misleading articles.

the 1.4 tsi polo gti is 1184kgs including driver and luggage.

    so about 1100kgs, not bad.

a 1.6 would add to that, unless its the same block with longer stroke or bigger bore.

maybe the pq25 supports only electric 4wd, not mechanical like the golf R?

the A1 (pq25) 4wd is from electric motors at the rear.

the latest news, see date, and its not from autocar:

    01.05.2010

Volkswagen is likely to release a “hot” Polo indexed R which will be faster and more powerful than recently shown Polo GTI.

According to data published in the German edition of Auto Motor und Sport, Polo R will be with a petrol turbo engine with 1.6 liters volume with the system of direct fuel injection.

The car will have a capacity of about 210 hp. This engine is a development of Volkswagen and will also appear in the new generation VW Golf in 2012.

Unlike the Golf R, Polo R version will not have 4×4 and will only be with simulated frontal locking realized with the help of ABS.

incidentally this also confirms my guess that the new engine will appear in the new golf.

It still looks like a training shoe. And, really, it's a car to train on before going on to faster cars - so, park two white ones next to each other, and what do you have? A pair of trainers!

Absolutely spot on dude! VW/Audi have the 1.2 tsi  1.4, 1.8, 2.0, 2.5 5cyl, which means they have covered all categories from 80-350 bhp so designing a new engine is quite irrelevant! Even if this displacement 1.6lt is the future and in the long run it will replace the 2.0 lt tsi downsizing wise, i don't think they would bother designing to strap it in this heap... A 210bhp 18k polo is even more laughable than a 210bhp fiat 500.

Golf VII or the the next gen A3 would be the the starting point of the new 1.6 tsi if ever there will be one...

There seems to be a lot of experts on here telling us what and what not VW have planned for the future.

OK Autocar may or may not be misleading, but where do these experts draw their information from? other magazines which of course may or may not be equally misleading.

To be fair to Autocar the text says "The VW Polo is expected to be powered by a..."

'Is expected' is not definitely. Get a life guys.
