    Dec 10, 2009 6:10 PM

GM is close to picking its preferred bidder for Saab - and Spyker is favourite according to reports.

Swedish news agency TT is reporting that GM favours a buyer that has experience in car production on a small scale and that plans to keep production in Sweden. This makes Spyker the most likely option.

"There are signals everywhere showing we are well on track," said a Saab spokesman.

Spyker and Saab could make a interesting combination, especially if thy dump the 9-3 range and take a step backwards slightly to the time before GM for inspiration and develop modern versions of classic 96s, 900s and 9000s. If they have the cajones to do this then, I wish them well.

What problems exactly? The Koenigsegg deal ended due to an ever increasing timeline. GM sitting on the fence, BIAC pushing for more control, the EU not making a decision on the EIB loan, lack of support for the Swedish government. Now the situation is different. The EU are just about to give a positive answer to the EIB loan, GM have a December 31st deadline, The Swedish government has appointed a SAAB czar to help in anyway for the process to go through and Spyker has a very strong financier behind them.
