  • Hot Mini diesels spied

These are the first pictures of Mini's new range of more powerful diesels testing.

On sale next year, the range will encopass the Cooper and Clubman and will initially go on sale with a Mini hatch equipped with the engine from a BMW 120d.

The spy pictures clearly show the Cooper version carrying centre mounted twin exhausts, a...Read the full article

I am still strugling to understand how they have managed to fit the BMW 2.0 diesel engine into a MINI, and why they didn't just borrow the PSA 2.0 diesel instead which is designed for FWD cars like the MINI.

Note to AutoCar - Its not the a special"120d engine", its the same unit found in the 116d, 118d, 120d, 316d, 318d, 320d and 520d. Just stick to calling it the BMW 2.0 diesel.

    Ditto!

And I thought PSA was updating the 1.6 to 125bhp soon, so surely with a bit more help from BMW that could go to 140bhp?

I could be cynical and say, because the MINI isn't so mini, but I'll leave that to someone else ;)

Lets take a wild guess at what technical wizardry has taken place here......... Wider track to squeeze in the engine, Stiffer dampers to offset extra weight, Bigger brakes to stop the extra weight, Bigger brake servo, Beef up transmission to deal with extra torque, Another 20 kilos of sound proofing, Throw in some chassis bracing to overcome the structural issues caused by hacking out the front structure fit 250kilos of pig iron. Is mini now being run by Australians! Can't wait for the Mini 4.4V8 Twin Turbo

Fat lump in at a fat car, talk of fake air scoops (the S looks so tacky at the moment with its fake grills) the Mini is one BIG fake it is not even mini, thing is if they did one with a 1.4 diesel that did 80mpg to compete against the bluemotions and econetics of this world, and stuck the speedo's 30mph in front of the driver rather than the passenger's right knee, might consider one then.

But what is the point of this unless it is 89CO2 after all the 320d now does 109CO2.

I am too surprised that it is a BMW unit - are you sure? Given the deepening of the PSA/BMW engine partnership, and that the PSA 2.0HDI unit is now giving 150-163bhp, it would be bizarre to sink all that development cash into creating something that could have been purchased off the shelf from over the border...

My guess is that it is the PSA unit after all, just the BMW publicity machine won't say so at present....

Size aside, the BMW engine is designed for RWD longitudinal applications, and the MINI is designed for a FWD transverse engine.

Thats what I suspect, there is no reason for them to use the BMW 2.0D over the PSA 2.0D unit. Both are capable of the same sort of power.

Notice, its only Autocar reporting this "story"....

There was talk ages ago of a MINI One diesel, to slot in below the CooperD, but I don't know where thats disappeared to, like you say that would be a good addition to the range.

I don't think many MINI drivers actually look at the central speedo, the digital one on the steering column is the one i use.

Originally there was going to be a One D, using the 90bhp version of the 1.6D from the Cooper D. I can't remember why it never materialized as at the right price with CO2 below 100g/km it could have sold very well.

A JCW version of the Diesel? would they go so low? surely it would be totaly against the sports brand ethos to make a car that wont handle very well and be much slower on a track than the normal JCW.
