  • Britain's 1000mph car revealed

    Nov 24, 2009 2:57 PM

Britain’s 1000mph car has been unveiled in Bristol, as its bid to break the world land speed record gathers momentum.

Bloodhound SSC has gone through 10 design evolutions since October 2008 and the final design has now been agreed. The car’s first attempts at the record, which currently stands at 763mph, will take place on the Hakskeen Pan in Northern Cape Province of South Africa in 2011.

This is brilliant news. And I wish them the very best of luck. Sadly, I can imagine this comment will inevitably be followed at some point with some ranting loony who says we shouldn't be doing this, lest our efforts to break a barrier cause a spike in global emissions. *Sigh*.

This will be exciting to watch, but I don't think 1000 mph will be achieved.  Sadly, they are going to keep pushing the speed up until the driver gets killed.

Good on them and all but for a country so against the car and most importantly 'speed', it just smacks of nothingness.

Don't knock me, just my .02 cents worth.

    Autocar:
Hakskeen Pan was eventually found to be the best site; it is a 12-mile track across a perfectly flat dried-up lake.

Hang on. If you're travelling at 1000mph then you're doing a mile every 3.6 seconds. They'd cover a 12 mile track (at top speed) in under 45 seconds...

    Are they sure about this?!!!

I'd like a bit more of a run up if I were driving!

You *peak* @ 1000 - u won't b holding that speed. The general speed delta will be more like a classic Gaussian curve.

I'm not and Engineer or an Aerodynamicist, but speaking as a complete lay-person, I'd want a wider track (as in the wheels being further apart not a bigger dried up lake) if I was driving something that tall.
