    Chris Harris resigned?!?!

    Apr 17, 2008 10:11 AM

Don't know if editorial wants him to leave quietly but he does appear to be not at Autocar anymore. No more writer-at-large, lost his column (congrat. steve anyway) and his M3 lost at the carpark. We do miss you a lot chris. Did I make something wrong throughout?

I'm not sure who the 'We' is in your post, but don't include me in that.  I'm glad he's gone to pastures different as I couldn't stand his writing (or video presenting).  I'm now glad I can ignore him completely as he focuses entirely on his new website 'project'.

It has been noticeable in the past two weeks what an excellent job the regular staffers and other contributers have done with the features now that Harris has gone, too.  Well done to them.  Sutcliffe will now give a more down to earth column rather than an attitude-filled one.  Things are definitely looking up, for me.

There certainly seems to have been a distinct lack of the usual "Farewell, God speed and good luck in your new venture" that traditionally accompanies the departure of a long-term member of the Autocar team. Its almost like a Stalinist re-writeing of history; maybe Chris really was just a figment of our collective imaginations. Personally I shall not particularly miss his column (I found his style a bit irritating) but at least he had some interesting views; I wonder if we shall ever hear of him again in whatever he is now doing. Any comment from the editorial team ?

Honestly I am a big fan of him just that at that age he has the passion on the whole automotive industry (And he actually drove loads latest supercars). How wonderful if you know a guy who owned RS4 for a year then switch to M3 and gave invaluable comments! And at the same time he did the "911 project" and I think it's wonderful -- art with mix of modern and historical elements. Yes some of his words or verdicts might be controversial but that depends on how you think. He did give some inspirations to me. So anybody knows where he's settling down? I only know his porsche is now a long-termer of GT purely porsche (so is Colin's).

Chris has left to pursue a new opportunity - and one that we won't be publicising for fairly obvious reasons. Yes, we miss him - but we're also committed to moving the game on and taking the website and the video we create into new directions.

Both Steve Sutcliffe and Colin Goodwin have already commented on Chris's departure in the magazine, so it's not like he's being erased from history - and the the videos he did for autocar.co.uk will always be accessible through the website.

Well i certainly will miss Chris, i enjoyed watching and reading his reviews. I think it's a shame he's gone he has been criticized for his lack of experience behind the camera but i think he did rather well. He was humourous, informative, he expressed himself well and had good points. I'm sorry but what isn't there to like about Chris Harris? I thourghly enjoyed watching him and i wish him the best in the future.

I personally really enjoyed his videos, and he seemed to be maturing as a presenter with experience. Compared to some of the other videos from Autocar and other magazines, I think his videos were a cut above. Some people have called him Clarkson-esque, but I think that's just a function of his enthusiasm and confident delivery. Compare to EVO's videos - I greatly respect and enjoy their magazine, but the commentary on a few of their online videos is terrible, which is a shame as their writers' enthusiam is usually overflowing in the magazine.

What the hell? I loved his reviews :(

Chris will be sorely missed and it will be interesting to see how autocar fills the void. His articles, whilst not to everyone's taste and occasionally devil's advocat-esque, were always thought provoking and made interesting reading regardlss of the subject.

However, what I will miss most are his videos. His delivery and professionalism infront of the camera has matured hugely over the years, to the point where I would rather watch one of his videos than anyone elses - and that includes Top Gear.

Sadly the other autocar writers who have made videos so far have been flat, dull, seemingly unenthusiastic and very missable. Come back Monkey - all is forgiven!!

I enjoyed his style as well.  He often gave the impression of the underdog, especially when Sutters was around.  I guess he was the second best driver at Autocar then?

I almost wonder if the feedback he got on the Z06 vs. GT2 was 'the straw that broke the camels back' though.  For those that are intent on sticking their knives in, I guess you must be enjoying the Autocar videos more now, right??

For me, the best writers talk about the car. Chris' problem was that he talked about himself too much, and had an almost desparate impulse to impress his own personality/lifestyle into the content of his articles, which frankly I found annoying. I wonder if he felt there was a credibility hurdle to overcome, and overcompensated as a result.

However, he certainly is an enthusiast, and anyone who loves cars that much is OK with me (except for Hitler).
