  Hi just wondering if anyone can help diagnose my cars problem? When turning left there is a vibrating noise coming from the front left side of the vehicle there is no noise when turning right. The tyre doesn’t look oversized but I think that it’s rubbing.(I am thinking bearings?) The other problem is only apparent when reversing,At first it was only when reversing uphill but its happening most of the time now.(I read another review which said gear linkage is a common fault??) 

I bought it around 3 weeks ago from a local dealer and was given 3 months warranty so hopefully that will cover the repairs. But if they moan where do I stand legally?

 

Any help/advice/opinions helpful!

Sorry i should probably have said what the problem was when reversing.

 

Basicly its a sound as if the cars scrapping along the ground but the sould again comes from the front left to the middle of the car this time. 

But there is no noise when you free wheel backwords only when you reverse.

Could be a bearing, depends what the noise sounds like really.

Jack the car up and put your hands at 9 and 3 o clock and try to rock the wheel, do the same at 12 and 6 and see if there's any slack movement. If not then try turning the wheel and listening, if the bearing is bad you should hear it grind a little. Check both sides as it's often the opposite side from the one that it sounds like.

 If it's a rubbing noise you hear check the wheel arches for silly things like the plastic arch lining having come away etc

as for the reversing issue it sounds like your car may not be engaging reverse properly, possibly a syncro issue although it could just as easily be a selector type problem, which is usually adjustable - this is potentially expensive so i'd insist it's rectified.

The first problem could be a bearing or could be the CV (or universal) joint - the CV joint is the thing that takes the propshaft from the transmission and applies it to the wheel at whatever angle the wheel is at at that time. Because of this they're put under a lot of stress. I'd say the CV joint sounds like your culprit, but do check things like your tyres carefully - if they're extra worn on one side they can make that sound as well. The 206 does have known gear linkage issues and normally when it goes you can't select reverse - it is a cheapish fix (part is £18 I think) and the new part is made from proper material rather than the Fisher Price plastic of the original. Am not sure this is your reversing problem though? I'd suggest getting the first thing fixed, then trying the car to see if the problem still exists - that way you're not paying labour to investigate the problem or parts for something that didn't need doing.

*sigh* - knew I shouldn't have pressed "post", as I always have something extra to add. Jim - if you're reading this I do think it'd be useful if we had a "technical help", or "mechanical help" section on the forums.

I took it to the garage i bought it from and they have said that it was a broken exhaust bracket that was making the rattling/grinding noise, so they have welded it back on and that should sort it they say.

Dont know why you would especially hear that when turning left or only reversing though.

 But i will give it a run over the weekend and let you know if i need to take it back.
