Upmarket hatches that aren't

I was at Goodwood today watching the Moving Motor Show and it struck me how many large upmarket saloons looks like hatchbacks but do not offer the convenience of one.

First up was a Porsche Panamera, followed by an XJ then an XF - I believe you could add the A5 to the list as well.

Then an M5 came past and it looked like a saloon, and even the CLS and four door 6 Series models do, so why can't Porsche, Jaguar and Audi do the same - surely this does not help their sales in upcoming markets like say China where they much prefer saloons to hatches?

Porsche sold around 7500 Panameras in China in 2011, around a third of the projected global sales.  I doubt Porsche worry too much.

If I knew what I was getting into, I wouldn't have done it...and I would have been wrong.

That is good for Porsche, and for the rest of us because around 7,500 less of these horrors will ever be seen outside of China.

Looks like win-win to me!

Don't forget that there are two variants of the A5, one being the original 2-door coupe with a boot, and the other ("Sportback") being a 4-door saloon with a hatch and a fairly pretty shape. Actually it's not bad for a mere Audi.

Glad you seem to have no bias, but what is the A7 supposed to be?

I think it looks dreadful - similar to an XJ!

When I get overtaken by Black A7's I always think it looks like a batmobile from the back.

Nicely put, and the Maxi was followed by the Princess and Ambassador!

Am looking forward to the Audi Allegro - oops too late the A3 is already out there!
