I'm not one to be obsessed with safety but if I had a family I'd certainly not be buying one of these anytime soon. (I wouldn't actually mind an elk though!). Scroll down for the video.

Edit: I should have put this under the Video section but nevermind.

Bloody hell that's scary, it wasn't even at that high a speed really.

Yeah, 40mph. What's as scary is Jeep's refusal to believe the results. Six tyre blow outs too. Ouch. Apologies to anyone who's just bought one for ruining your day.

I like the Cherokee but they don't have a very good record with crash tests in the past and now this.
You can still move it to the video section under edit, if you want. That rallycross video I posted was in used cars for 3 days until I noticed. Oops.

Only last year, the Patriot or Compass (can't remember which) achieved a two star EuroNCAP safety rating. Jeep really ought to work on the safety of its cars.

Thanks Lee, I've moved it now, didn't realise you could do that.

not good but at least it did not roll. Do wonder though if there was a bit less grip on the front would it do the same. What would be nice is to see the M class in the same video - as they are much the same underpinnings it be a good show in the difference in handling.

The video doesn't start from my computer at work but I guess it's the same I saw some days ago. I remember it well because there is a former university fellow of mine in it, Massimo, who works at Fiat press office. He is the tall slim guy who try to say something in a bad English...
I don't think it is alarming how it seems. The car has passed several similar tests without consenquences, even done by more important magazines like Auto Motor und Sport, that also repeated the test last week after the video came out. The action on the steering is intentionally overly sharp and I think the vehicle is not loaded in a normal manner, probably concentrating too much weight in the boot. A tire/surface combination can do the rest. For instance you can clearly see the action on the steering applied with the XC90 is smoother.
I am not saying that the car has perfect handling on the elk test but once a skilled road tester identify a small weakness he can easily underline it with driving behavior to prove himself right, even on a apparently "fixed" test.

It doesn't look good on the video, but it would be more useful to see all of the comparable SUVs being lined up to do the same test at the same location on the same day, being driven by the same independent driver. So; Jeep Grand Cherokee, LR Disco 4, Volkswagen Touareg, Volvo XC90, BMW X5, Audi Q7, Mercedes ML, Toyota Land Cruiser, Mitsubishi Shogun, etc. I can't imagine a few of those performing any better than the Jeep.
I agree with matsoc that the Volvo didn't look like it was being driven as forcefully. Is that because the car responded much better, or because it's a Swedish mag testing a Swedish car? Also, the Swedish results were directly contradicted by a supposedly identical German test, so it's difficult to put too much emphasis on the Swedish test.
