Should I get a Brera diesel??

My first post on this forum and I'd like your opinions if you will.

Up until September last year I used to have an RX8 which I loved till my mileage shot up and started to empty my bank account far too quickly and then the RX8 died suddenly. So I've been looking round for something interesting, different, quicker than average, with a diesel engine. The Brera sounds fantastic and looks beautiful and fits nicely into my £9k budget but should I get something else instead?? My first car was a 156 T Spark so I'm not a stranger to Alfa ownership - better than my mates Audi ownership but that's another story.

What do you think and why?

the place i sold the rx8 to replaces the wankel engine with heavily modified TT engines. Then depending on your bank balance will shaneg pretty much everything of the suspension etc. Not sure i see the point, just buy a TT and go from there.

It used to a common problem was better on the RX7 and better still fr the RX8. Bought second, over 7 years old and with over 100k on the clock Mazda weren't helping

Sorry to hear that. I seem to remember that the rotor tips were the major problem with the Wankel engines of yore, though Mazda have carried on. Is this a common problem? I guess Mazda were not very helpful on a contribution to repair? In the old days, some clever sod would put a big conventional engine in place of the rotary and go around hairy chesting. No chance now.

The RX8 was a 53 plate and had done 101k miles. Right oil regularly put in and was setrviced as per the manual.

Drove it 50 miles came off the motorway and stopped at some traffic lights and put it in neutral. Lights changed to green I put it in first and the engine just stopped. Thought i'd stalled it but it wouldn't start up again.

Had it recovered to a local garage before it was moved to a specialist. Had new plugs and leads, oil, filter, air filter fitted, all electrics and starter motor checked and all working fine. There was just no compression to create combustion. Was offered a rebuild kit, which was told may not solve the problem - most likely worn away rotor tips - or buy a new engine. Didn't have the money for a new engine plus fitting. Eventually after trying several people the RX8 was sold for £400 scrap - GUTTING!!

Loved that car.....

Divil, without wishing to cause gnashing of teeth, how old and how many miles was you RX, and when you say it died, what exactly has happened?

A necessary evil unfortunately. I'm covering about 18-20k miles a year going back and forth to my girlfriends place and picking up my daughter on weekends.

My older brother had a diesel GT and while nice i didnt gell with it when i drove. Steering was too light and vague for my liking even on the rubber band 18's he had on it. Besides can't copy him - i know a typical brother comment to make

You should work for the marketing dept of Alfa. Think my girlfriend would have something to say about being called my mistress though!
