Hi All,

I'm new to the forum, and I'm looking for a new car.

I'm after a fairly basic family car, economical, and with a decent size boot for the dog.

I have the option to buy a friends car, which is a 59 plate Astra 1.6 life which has only done 2400 miles for £5750.  I thought this was a great deal, but I had a quick look on Parkers and Webuyanycar and it seems quite an expensive price.

I had an Astra as a courtesy car after a recent accident, and really enjoyed the drive, but if people would recommend something different, I'd love to hear.

What do people think to the option above?

Thanks,

Dom

Astras do lose their value very quickly but if its really done less than 2,500 miles its nearly new. Add to that getting it from someone you know (so hopefully you know it hasnt been unreliable, crashed, or thrashed), its probably worth having it.

If you dont buy this, would you go to a dealer, or buy private. the first is usually expensive, the secons full of dangers, all of which makes a car from someone you know and trust a good option.

As for how they drive, they are fine. And although the 1.6 isnt that quick or economical, its not likely to cause any problems either.

I don't think I'd have the guts to buy private, I have friends who've been bitten before.

It is a massive advantage knowing the person I'm buying from, she drives like a Grandma, so It's certainly not been thrashed!!

You're right the Astra is a great family car, and its actually one of the most popular cars in the UK! Its a great size, and that's a good deal you're getting!

We used to own a Ford Focus, its a smaller family car but good value and realiable, I'd reccommend it!

You should check out what's on Gumtree near you, you can get some great second-hand deals on there and go check them out before buying, might be an idea. There's a website called carhoots.com that's got a lot of links to 2nd hand car deals online too and public reviews.

With such a low mileage and having known the previous owner, it sounds like it would be good value, presuming it's the new shape Astra, but I wouldn't advise you to buy it if you intend on keeping it for long, as although it ought to be reliable, its value will drop like a stone. If you intend to sell it on shortly after buying it, you could make a profit from it if you're quick!

Hi! Astra is great car, but in my opinion Vauxhall Astra 2.0 would be better option then 1.6, you can check some Astra models at Autopazar, there is a lot of great Astra models to buy.

Don't buy it, if you've got this amount to spend, there are better than the Astra, just because it's ultra low miles, doesn't mean it's a bargain, it means it's hardly been used, barely run-in, it could have problems. When buying a friends car your putting yourself in a difficult position, first, ask them if they mind if you have it inspected?, afterall your parting with a large amount of hard earned cash, now, they might object on the grounds you might not trust them?,give that a go first, that's my advice.

Why's that? The 1.6 makes much more sense.
