Looking at the valuations ie. CAP guide etc, I reckon a grand is reasonable privately and I would put in on for £1200. For you Fidji, I'd take £999 Wink

It's a good offer, but I'll wait and see if you can get a good deal selling privately. If not, I'll step in when you're desperate and make a really low offer! Wink

Why, thank you... but you'll have to be quick Fidji, reckon I'll buy the GTi tomorrow. Can't be fussed with selling privately esp now you have to have your car insured. I'll sell it to you for £850- final offer! Wink

If you do get lumbered with the standard speakers, there's an aftermarket Alpine amp kit that sorts it. the speakers themselves are OK, it's the feeble amplification from the head unit that's the real problem

Great, thanks for the info. I spend a lot of time in my car so a decent stereo is a must.

How about one of these? 2008, 50k miles under £10k

Seat Freetrack - 170bhp, 4 wheel drive, 0-60 8.6 seconds, 42mpg

Comes in some groovy colours!, plenty of space and kit included.

Golf GTD that won't need winter tyres!

When I test drove the car I didn't think to listen to the stereo, pretty much every other car I've driven over the last few years has had at least an acceptable stereo. The rear speakers are really bad, my clock radio sounds better!

Yes - I have the upgraded system with amp and 10 speakers in my 1 series which is pretty good. The Harmon-Kardon set-up is even better. One final thought - if you go for a 1 series I highly recommend you find one with upgraded stereo and sports seats. In both cases I found the standard items terrible

I've just changed to a 3 Series M Sport which has the sports seats, which are very good but the BMW professional stereo really is crap.

When I test drove the car I didn't think to listen to the stereo, pretty much every other car I've driven over the last few years has had at least an acceptable stereo. The rear speakers are really bad, my clock radio sounds better! I'll start by changing the speakers soon and hope things improve.

You're right and it's cheaper to buy. But for me, it's not that nice to look at. After owning a Passat for 5 years I want a car I like the look of!

Fair enough! A lot of money to spend on something that isn't to your taste. Personally I actually prefer the Skoda, especially the estate, but if you've just had a Passat it'd hardly be much of a change...

Another suggestion - when I was considering Golfs and 1 series, the other car I really liked was the Honda Civic. Both the Type R and the Type S with the 2.2 diesel are nice cars. Civics are a bit of a Marmite thing though...

One final thought - if you go for a 1 series I highly recommend you find one with upgraded stereo and sports seats. In both cases I found the standard items terrible.

Well... here's my honest ad! It's a 51 plate Passat V5 (170bhp) with 122k on the clock and with full service history in blue. Due a service now but has about 6 months MOT and 4 months tax. Interior is in great nick (leather/alcantra) bar the rearview mirror (it's an auto-dim one where the stuff inside has leaked). The exterior is what I'd call poor; the lacquer on the bonnet has a 6 inch peel and another part which is also getting worse- it'll need a respray eventually if the new owner cares at all! There are a few subtle scrapes, esp the front bumper after I hit a muntjac last year. It did lose though!

I appreciate your honesty!

Probably over my budget (£10k)... but how much are you selling it for?

Oh, I live near Rutland Water which is about an hour and a half from Hemel Hempstead.

That's spooky. I work just a couple of minutes from Hemel Hempstead!
