In a previous posting, I had access to an 'armored' Vauxhall Astra with beefed up suspension and a tuned 2.2 engine. It was awful to drive, but would appear to be the definition of what a Q car is.

Cry me a river, build a bridge and then get over it; swallow a concrete pill and harden the frak up.

Jerry your not a scifi fan then? your username SG1 - SG1 was the name of the team in the scifi TV series Stargate, Jack O'Neill was the leader of the team

What a coincidence! But no, am never a fan of sci-fi themed movies.

'SG' is the top-level domain Internet code for Singapore. Have I just reveal my nationality?! Lol!

'1' is just a random plucked out of the air number.

Right, I digressed. Apologies. Back to Q. Smile

Or even better, how about an S60R? Or a V70R.

My car could be considered a bit of a Q-car. It's a diesel, so those cocky 3-Series drivers don't expect to be left behind by miles.

Apart from those with more powerful engines?

Traditionally a Q Car is something innocuous, that can pass unnoticed in the street, almost invisibly but has a hidden high performance ability, I was bending it a bit to borrow the hidden bit (but perhaps not the high performance bit!)

Thank you for the explanation. I really should know that but, despite regularly seeing the term used, somehow that one has passed me by. Oh God, perhaps I'm not actually a petrolhead after all! Smile

Surely you jest?

I tell you, I'm worried! Lol!

Wow! Leave the forum now and buy heat magazine you disgraced non-petrolhead!

I've only seen one once but the Passat B5 W8 went like a rocket. 275bhp in a fairly non-descript car must put it close to being the ultimate 'Q' car. Especially as you can pick them around £3k! Just don't look at the mpg on the trip computer...

Of which most of them aren't. I can kind of tell by reading the badge on the back.

I can't believe how cheap Passat W8s have become! I seriously want one! There's nothing else quite like them! Mine would have to be an estate for added unsuspectedness.

I feel like such a fraud! So what does the 'Q' stand for, then?

You know, I do believe that is a 'pec'...

Um, errr, hmmm... Queen?

Actually, I looked it up yesterday! It derives from Royal Navy Q-ships- heavily armed merchant ships used to lure in u-boats and the like. Q stands for Queenstown, Ireland which was their home port.

Could have made myself sound really clever then, instead of plagarising Wikipedia! Wink
