BMW pretty much invented the appealing but unlikely idea of serving supercar pace in an executive saloon and, when it emerged in 1984, the first M5 delivered not only fine performance but excellent handling, too. Though it has been a minority interest model, the format prompted Mercedes to leap in, first with the 500E and then with its AMG E55s, Jaguar with the XJR and Audi with its RS6.
