Very impressive acceleraton times in this road test, with only 190bhp and a fair weight! I remember the touring doing similarly impressive times.

LOL - I can just imagine the "Autocar are biased towards BMW" gang.... they'll be thinking "Course BMWs get amazing 0-60 times, they test BMWs downhill...."

Some cars come along that are so good that often they're seen as the best car ever in their class as their replacements fail to build on that car's strengths significantly. The previous E39 model was one of those cars. While, probably bar ride quality, the current model is subjectively a better car overall it hardly moved the game on from its predecessor to the point where it could be said the E39 is a better car.
And while there is no doubt Autocar has a bias to BMWs, the excellence of the E39 could not be denied - it trounced all its rivals and was probably better than all the cars from the class above bar the W220 S-Class, another car which could be seen as best ever in the executive class.
