"Measures up on comfort and space, but it’s still boring to drive"
That's completely different to what I always thought it was in every way. I always thought the 1-Series was good to drive thanks to its RWD chassis, but cramped inside because of the transmission tunnel intruding and suffered from a very crashy ride.

I'm surprised you notice the model. There are so many BMWs around of all predicable shapes and class they hardly turn the head. I noticed the latest- shaped sports car today in powder blue livery but it was bested by a bright red new MX5 directly behind.

I agree. Recently, BMW has been playing it safe, not doing anything new or revolutionary. I have no desire to own any of their current range.

Well you may have thought it bested by the MX5 but being bright red probably helped the Mazda - Z4 would probably have looked better in a braver colour. Certainly on an open road there isn't a current MX5 that can keep up with any current Z4.
Anyway back to the 1 Series review; I drive an 07 1 Series but recently had a new 1 Series as a courtesy car and I found neither boring. Perhaps Autocar testers that get to drive 911 Carreras, F430s and similar fairly regularly get a bit blase.
I also cannot understand why they get so excited about Focus's/Foci - my sister has one and refinement seems to be something Ford desginers have yet to discover, along with build quality!
