M25 Services

I'm popping back to the UK for a couple of weeks, I'll be hiring a car and doing some visiting.

The problem is that I'll be driving my Grandad around for some of the time and we need to go west from the M23 on the M25, all the way around to the M1. We all know traffic is a nightmare in that direction and can mean spending a large amount of time stuck. My Grandad is in his nineties and can need to stop to use the toilet fairly often. Does anyone know any strategic pitstops we can make heading west on the M25?

Thanks for the help.

There's a few, and they are well signposted in advance.  Failing that, there are that many exits that you can always duck off the M25 to find a nearby service station quite easily.

Im doing something similar but am wondering if hiring a boat may be more appropriate . Well at least it wont be dusty and sandy .

Wonder what the queues will be like in T5 ?

The M25 services between junctions 9 and 10 are due to open this summer and will be between about 7 minutes and 4 hours west of the M23/M25 junction, depending on traffic conditions. Good luck!

The beauty of the M25 is that you can of course go around it in two directions.  It's about twenty miles further to J21 from J7 via Dartford (and £1.50), but there are three major services and another on Brook Street just off J28 so you'll have plenty of opportunity to stop despite the slightly longer journey.

I ask you, yorkers (if that is your real name!), how does this help a nonagenrian find bladder relief on the Motorway 25?

Thanks for the assistance. Hopefully those new services will be open by the time I'm back, otherwise I'll take your advice and travel anti-clockwise. I've avoided this in the past because the Dartford crossing can be messy.

As a word of warning to everybody that uses these forums...

About 10 days ago some spyware landed on my machine that meant my email was hacked. I've subsequently removed it but it's worth noting that it came from either a fake Adobe Flash update or from one of the links on the wonderful new Autocar Forum site.

Top tip.  When travelling towards the tunnel, once past the entry slip from the A2 (J2), keep left.  The temptation is to keep right to use the buckets, but so many cars do this they spill over to the manned booths towards the middle, then cause congestion in lanes three and four.  Keeping left seems slower at first, but once past the off for 1a, the only traffic contributing to the left most manned booths are a few lorries and the traffic joining from 1a.

From the other direction, stay in lane 3, then go for the left most buckets or first of the manned booths.  Lorries can't go there, and so many in lane three try to filter into lane 4 before the split.

There really is some odd behaviour in that part of the world.

Dartford Tunnel: I also keep way left, and often find it quicker to join the queue behind a few lorries. Unless your're unlucky and get behind a foreign one, they generally have dart tags fitted so drive straight through. 2 or 3 lorry's end up getting you to the front of the queue much quicker than the equivalent length of say 8 or nine cars as the drivers fumble for their small change.

It might be worth a reminder that if you do chose tomgomanticlockwise, that Junction 5 sometimes catches people out as if you keep on the outside 2 lanes, you join the M26. Keep to the near side to continue on the M25.
