Anyone else remember this guy who's article by the above name was in Autocar every week up until a few years ago?  It finished when he passed away I remember and now James Ruppert occupies his space today.

I used to always get great enjoyment out of his cockney slang and found his stories from the trade each week insightful.

He is much missed , and died much too soon. Ruppert is interesting, but not the same.

Agree totally.  I find him interesting but still no match for the late John Coates.

By the way, there is no doubt that the spoof journalist 'Carcoat Damphands' of Sniff Petrol fame is based on him: http://sniffpetrol.com/category/carcoat-damphands/

Wasn't there a tribute article to Coates in an issue around the time he died?
