Full marks for whoever came up with this idea (presumably someone at Ford). The geek in me would like to see the whole mechanism working. I think you'll agree it's a neat solution to ugly rubber door protectors. The video is down the page a little.

They are a great idea. Well done FORD.

But at only £50, why on earth arent they standard! All those company Focii which arent allowed extras will go without!

And do they come on the back doors too? Children are the worst offender for banging doors into the car next to them. They are probably needed there even more.

No idea about the rear doors but you're right about that.  Really good idea although when I sent my Dad that link in an email to brighten his day at work he replied 'Great until it goes wrong and the door jams. Looks like style over substance to me'. There's no pleasing some people!

Saw this last week and almost posted it myself. Yes, brilliant idea and they do appear on the back doors as well. Your old man is right, though, they do look like they have the potential to go wrong.

You know, I do believe that is a 'pec'...

To be honest, when I saw the thread title, I thought it was another spammer!!!  Nice idea though, but useless if restricted to only the driver's door...and it won't stop someone that isn't simillarly equiped from damaging your car, whcih is the real problem.

If I knew what I was getting into, I wouldn't have done it...and I would have been wrong.

It's on all doors.

Cheers.  Here's the Ford PR from last September -> http://media.ford.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=35304 ...I'm suprised this wasn't a significant Autocar story...it's precisely the kind of cut and paste jobby that seems right up their street (apologies Autocar if it was...but not for the c&p bit).

If I knew what I was getting into, I wouldn't have done it...and I would have been wrong.

I once saw in an advert, and i think it was in this mag,for sale in America, what amounted to being cot bumpers for cars, they went right around the car.

True it's other parkers you really have to worry about but if you've got kids or are just generally one of the weird people who don't care about your bodywork then it's a good idea. Or I guess if all cars start to get them then supermarkets won't be such a dodgy place to park your car from careless people.

Presumably it's a mechanical setup that works from the hinge side of the door when it gets to a certain position when open it pops it out.

It's Ford, so it'll be a laminated piece of cardboard folded to a concertina and attached at each end with a plastic "rivet", and the very time one goes 'ping' it'll be just as you are closing the door with the protector stuck out. Laughing out loud
