Dear Autocar,

At the supermarket on Saturday I picked a up a copy of Autocar magazine and was casually flicking through the articles when I came across a multi-page spread relating to an auction of aging American Muscle Cars.   I have to object to this sort of thing in the strongest possible terms.

On being assaulted with the vision of a Hemi Orange 69 Charger with tweaked crate motor I began to drool.  The situation was in no way resolved by the gratuitous inclusion of a picture of an early Firebird 455 SD and significantly worsened by the mention of an immaculate Plymouth Road Runner and a 1970 Pontiac GTO - all for the price of a well specified Golf.

This sort of gratuitous automotive titillation should not be allowed without due warning – at least on the internet, I know what I’m getting into and can search for it on purpose, but to be caught unawares while expecting to read about the latest eco tin box – well, it’s just plain irresponsible.

For goodness sake, be more careful about what you print in there.

I know what you mean Challenger. after reading about it myself I was nursing a Hemi Smile

Love the smell of a V8 in the morning.

I like 'em subtle. like this 426 Coronet, even if the pic doesn't fit.

I hate Gumtree too! For same reason. Just emailed a friend to see if three of us together would buy it and share it.

Am I getting old to start thinking of semi-classics?

I'm having a chuckle to myself imagining the fit Whatcar? would have at the suggestion of such an article. "Low rent interior", "monumental depretiation" and "does nothing a VW Golf doesn't do better"

  • Let depreciation be your friend...

£600!   What's the worst that could happen...!?   new tyres on these alloys and you'd sell them on e-Bay to get half your money back!

It's been smoked in (cigarette burns on seat) so it'll stink like a rancid ashtray. I wouldn't have it if it was given to me.

I agree, could sell parts, and anyway £200 each + some tidying up costs is nothing.

To answer Leslie's comments - I have a very good industrial vax and can find good seats for next to nothing. I can't stand the smell of a smoked in car too!

It was great to see these venerable old cars. Makes a pleasant change from the usual BMW's we get.

P.S: Autocar, when are we going to get an issue without a BMW on the front cover? I hate the things.
