BMW at the Olympics

Has anyone been to the Olympic venues? Are they covered in BMW branding?

I seem to remember BMW sinking a lot of money into being the Olympic car provider and people crying foul because Nissan had offered electric cars and charging infrastructure throughout the capital. I've seen zero BMW branding on the BBC and with resentment towards the Olympic lanes and therefore the BMWs in them, I'm struggling to see what's actually in it for BMW.

I haven't been to any of the events and have stayed well away from London so don't know what's going on there, but for weeks in the run up to the Olympics as the torch went around the country (just to spread the traffic chaos around the UK, I guess) there was a BMW sitting right behind the person with the torch. It was on the news day and night for weeks.

I've no idea how it adds to the brand, or future sales but they have had some exposure from it.

I believe actual advertising with the park and venues is not allowed. Sponsors/partners can use their logos where appropriate, i.e. McDonalds can use their name on and in their own concession, and Visa on ATMs and PDQs, and the same would apply for BMW. There are hundreds of the things on the roads in London, if not thousands, and I imagine BMW are using their association for all it's worth in advertising in the UK and around the world. Even if it is a "Partner of the 2012 Olympics" strap-line I'm sure it is worth it to them.

If I knew what I was getting into, I wouldn't have done it...and I would have been wrong.

I wonder if they'll all be on the used car market come this time next week.

"Partner of the 2012 Olympics". You're right, that's quite a strap line to have.

Good point too, Lee. I'd forgotten about the Olympic torch relay and the 'Torchcam'. That was a huge amount of exposure.

I'd never make it as a marketing exec.

Funny you should say this as I was speaking to someone today who is seriously looking to buy one and has made enquiries already! Annoyingly conversation was cut short so I don't know any more.

Did I imagine it or were the chase cars at the cycle races BMWs ? And what about the radio controlled toy MINIS on the athletics field, returning the javelins etc to the start ? They are generating some controversy.

You didn't and they were. There are 4000 Olympic BMW's, I see many of them every day and 90% seem to contain just the driver.

Van Hool.

Does that make me "Dork of the Week"?

Anyhoo, on my way to the office this morning I passed this;

Around the corner, to the right of the picture, was another twelve.  Essentially a taxi rank exclusively full of BMWs.  Repeated in several places around town, not to mention there's probably ten times more actually on the move at any given time; all associated with the Olympics, and now, what has turned out to be a very good Olympics for the Great Britain team. How can that not be good exposure?

And, of course the shiney new Park Lane dealership opened, in time for the Olympics, along with these two arrivals...
