Crack on you most probably paid tax all your life why not, if you don't take it then they will just give to some one who has no intention of working.
Don't think you've read the thread properly. He's saying that he wants to give up. Not to be condoned at all.
Used to be of that opinion myself. Now that I've done everything that govts asked of me (educate, train, gain further qualifications, be flexible and be mobile) I still find myself staring unemployment in the face for the 2nd time. Since I've started my current position the construction Industry has contracted by 5.8%. Over 70 Scottish construction companies of substance have gone bust. Haven't the figures for England but it'll be a damn site more. That equates to a lot less positions to apply for and a lot more built professionals applying for them.
At some point surely I can sit back, say "done my bit" and get some dog walking and mountain biking in at the tax-payer's expense.
Set yourself up as a DJ. Most DJs get employed on personality and how many lights they have. It really isn't hard pressing a play button and a stop button and you have some great times. It'll cost you about a grand at least to set yourself up with the basics (2 xCDJ decks/Vinyl record decks, mixer, speakers, lighting rig) obviously if you want the top equipment you spend more (Pioneer CDJ's are about £3k for a pair). Charge between £100 - £150, have a laugh doing it, sorted.
Or, if you feel brave and/or talented, go into club DJing where you need to seemlessly mix tracks together and earn much more.
Ofcourse all of this post is useless if you aren't a fan of music!
Good grief man, get yourself down to London. Someone of your experience an expertise will be tripping over job offers, especially in commercial, but of particular interest to you will be the mixed use University halls of residence projects flowering (with £9k per year per student to spend, that is where the cash is)
If I knew what I was getting into, I wouldn't have done it...and I would have been wrong.
Spoke to my old man on the phone last night. He's so unhappy at work (commercial director of scaffolding company) he's thinking of applying at B&Q for a job as one of these oldish knowledgeable types who help people out in-store with DIY enquiries.
Not a bad idea as the stress would be gone but at 66 I'm not sure they're allowed to take him on?
He said work's majorly dried up in construction in the south east and they've close their Barnsley division too.
