Anyone grudge it if I just give up and sign on?

Just attended a seminar where a pile of SMEs (a mix of construction contractors, electricians, plumbers, gasfitters, insulation installers ect) with core business models based on providing services to Social Housing were informed funding for renovation, reactive repairs, newbuild and re-generation programs will in the near future "fall off a cliff".

Have only been in work from March and have been told I'll be chopped by October. Prior to getting this job I was forced to make do with a number of short term consultancy gigs and a part time job as one of the UK's best qualified part time shit shovelers (ok stable lad).

I've attended university, obtained post grad and a number of professional qualifications, worked self employed for a pittance, travelled to obtain work, accepted a cut in salary and been very flexible with regards to tasks I've been prepared to do and hours I'm prepared to work.

I've had enough. My house is paid for as are both my cars. I can give up and let you lot support me. Hope no-one grudges this but then again if you do.... tough.

PS. Reason I haven't been on the site isn't a reflection of the site or new members but due to the fact I've been so knackered after work and the ridiculous amount of travelling I'm doing I haven't the energy to post. That, and the fact it could be years before I can think about a new car and I'm spending so much time driving I'm sick of it I've pretty much lost interest in car related matters.

Hi Kojak. (I can hardly talk...)

Good to see you post although it's not a happy one. Sounds like you're thoroughly peed off.

My Dad's in the construction industry too and is very fed up at the moment. The stress of the job is really getting to him and his retirement can't come soon enough. He's 66 already but can't afford to quit yet as he's mortgaged up to the tits.

I have an architect friend who's been made redundant twice and is labouring again. Thing is, what do you instead. The answer is simple. Give it up and set up TBH's adrenaline junky Scottish mountain biking retreat!

That's brilliant. If you give up and sign on you'll have plenty of time to post here, so it's a win win! Welcome back.

You know, I do believe that is a 'pec'...

Some forces are advertising for police officers. You could always join and become a police motorcyclist! ;)

Glass half full: you're in a better position than many with your house and cars paid for. You're currently in work so now is a good time to look for another job; people in work are more employable than those out of it. Is now a good time to try a different direction? Learn a new skill you always wanted? Write to Autocar and offer them your writing services; you'd have some endorsements from several forum members! Big smile

Sorry to here that, no hard feelings here. Okay, I no longer pay UK taxes but I certainly paid my fair share for 15 years. It sounds like you've paid enough in your time too...

I get the impression you won't be out of work for long though, some people have too much drive to do nothing.

That'll keep the masses angst ridden and ready to do as told. Better means of control than reds under the bed, or terrorists in the shrubbery.

First, check if your phone has ever been hacked. If the least suspicious call a lawyer named Mark Lewis, smart guy, contracted multiple-schleroris years ago, slows his speech though not his thought, but impedes his deportment and his physical balance. Understandably melancholy, depressed a while back, he took on a lone, desperate client claiming Murdoch's newspaper empire was out to destroy him. Lewis's law partner had been knocked into touch before when a would-be client thought he too was getting "da organisation's" treatment, and refused to take on the new client. Lewis was made of sterner stuff. Maybe he thought there was nothing to lose, personally, everything for his client to gain.

Soon as he agreed to take on the case Lewis got threatened by the self-same people ... he's done quite well since, quite the hero, a David versus Goliath figure, a combination of resolve, moral backbone, fierce sense of justice, but with a project, a cause, to keep his mind of self-pity and his ever accelerating, ultimately fatal illness.

Giving up is never the answer.

Good to see you still fighting fit, TBH.

Try Paragon fleet solutions - I'm not sure where you are based - it doesn't matter that much as they have cars moving about all over the place. If you are too far away they should be able to point you in the direction of a similar firm, closer to you.

They deliver cars to potential fleet users. No side of the road with trade plates stuff - decent cars as well. A rival company to this one made a top stopgap for me some years back.

You get to drive about - no one bothers you - it's not too bad.

Do you have enough of a particular subject in your degree to teach? It's not a suggestion I'd make to everyone, but you seem to have bags of personality. I seem to recall that you were once married to a teacher and this may have coloured your judgement of that idea, but give it some thought. didn't do me any harm for 20+ years. I think.

I also think that if you find yourself unemployed you should write down your life story. I'm not pretending it would make you rich, but what with Kindle, etc, you might make a bob or two. We'd all read it, wouldn't we?

Amyway, welcome home. Too bad you weren't around for the Dads thread.

Yes, TBH seems like a chap who won't take it lying down.

That's not what I heard!

Edit: Not sure how I managed to make those 'Quote' bits appear, but you get the idea.
