What’s new?
Petrol-engined versions of the Logan are already on sale in Europe, but this is our first opportunity to drive the diesel.
It uses the well-proven 1.5-litre common-rail unit from Renault, tuned to produce 64bhp and 118lb ft of torque.
What’s it like?
The engine is very impressive, the car slightly less so. The diesel provides good response between 1500 and 2500rpm and is impressively frugal. Combined consumption is quoted as 58.0mpg and during our time with the car it returned almost 56mpg.
Although perfectly acceptable to drive, the Logan has a couple of dynamic weaknesses. Too much wind and road noise penetrates the cabin above 70mph and stability is poor.
Should I buy one?
If parent company Renault decides to bring the Dacia to the UK, and you want a low-budget car, then yes — especially as it also has plenty of space for five passengers, 500 litres of boot space and a large touring range thanks to the diesel engine.
