New BMW 5-series revealed: lighter, sleeker, and a 600bhp, 4WD M5; Mega new Civic Type R tested; Nissan’s baby GT-R; Subaru BRZ wagon; Faster F-types planned

This week's Autocar magazine is led off by the the full inside story on the new BMW 5-series, which is expected to take advantage of new technology to radically lower emissions and up its technology levels, including being sold with a semi-autonomous driving option.

The Tokyo motor show and LA motor show provide further revelatory news.

The Nissan IDx concepts and Yamaha Motiv city car, designed by Gordon Murray, steal the headlines in Japan, with Autocar magazine exclusively outlining potential different bodystyles - including a baby sports car - for the Murray. Two Hondas also captured the imagination: the Honda S660 baby sports car, and the Honda Vezel baby SUV.

The LA motor show round-up includes news of even faster Jaguar F-type coupé derivatives to come, plus the full lowdown on the new Subaru WRX, Porsche Macan and Mini. We also have the lowdown on the new Ford Edge, a large SUV destined for sale in Europe.

Away from the main show calendar, we have details of the facelifted Lexus CT200h, and the full story of the 2014 model year Morgan 3 Wheeler.

This week's eight-page road test pores over the finest details of the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso, for so long a class leader in many respects in its previous guise, while our first drives feature cars from the other end of the spectrum of performance and price, including the Nissan GT-R Nismo, VW Golf Design Vision GTI, Honda Civic Type R and Range Rover LWB. Updates from our long-term test fleet include a farewell to the Volkswagen CC, and the latest on our Range Rover, Vauxhall Adam, Renault Twizy and Maxda Mazda MX-5.

Our features section adds to the eclectic mix, with Steve Sutcliffe pitting the new Alpina D3 against the mighty Mercedes C63 AMG, and Andrew Frankel investigating the new technology that Volvo expects to take the fight to its premium rivals.

James Ruppert tackles the subject of the best used 4x4 cars to buy for winter, while our detailed used car buying guide heads in a different direction, offering the full lowdown on how to buy a decent Alfa Romeo 1555 from just £500. Meanwhile, we ask you to put your mind to the question of whether to spend £15,000 on a new Seat Leon SC or a used Ford Escort Costworth.
