New name for creators of hot VWs

VW creates 'R' division

Volkswagen is set to launch a new specialist department to cater for its hot models.

Volkswagen R GmbH has been created to take over from Volkswagen Individual, and will continue with the development, implementations and sales of Volkswagens hotter models.

VW Golf R first drive review

The current R portfolio already includes the Scirocco and Golf Rs, as well as the R line design packages.

Ulrich Riestenpatt gt. Richter, general manager of Volkswagen R GmbH, said: "Our vehicles contribute to the emotionalisation and growth of Volkswagen brand."

The new operation, based just outside Wolfsburg, employs over 300 staff.

So it's official now rather than most car enthusiasts thinking they already had and R division. A bit like Ford announcing they are going to create an ST division after many years of putting ST on the back of sprightly models.

Yawn.
