Volvo aims at BMW X1 with V40 Cross Country

New V40 variant is a new contender in the premium soft-roader market

Volvo is targeting the BMW X1 with this new V40 Cross Country, which will go on sale next month.

Based on Volvo’s new five-door hatch, the V40 XC features a 173mm ride height — a 40mm increase over the standard V40’s. It also has a beefed-up appearance characterised by an alloy-style body kit. A black honeycomb grille and the option of 19-inch wheels on top-spec models are also new.

Despite its off-road pretensions, the V40 XC line-up will have only one all-wheel-drive model: a 250bhp, 295lb ft 2.5-litre T5 petrol available with a six-speed automatic gearbox. A 1.6-litre petrol and three diesels make up the rest of the range.

The V40 XC is tipped to carry a £2000 premium over a equivalent V40 hatch, suggesting a starting price  of about £22k.

I don't see the point of not offering AWD as an option on diesels. I hope this changes by the time of launch.

So what's the point unless you have the 4x4? A jacked up V40 (so not so nice to drive or as safe), the same interior space with some extra plastic £2K please. I agree it will sell well and I think it looks better from the outside compared to the V40.

I like the V40 a lot, and I like this too. But as others have said, the absence of a diesel with AWD is a massive oversight. An AWD D4 would have been perfect.

when something will do well. And, when i saw the pictures on MSN, i thought exactly that. Sure, Volvo would be foolish not to offer the brilliant D3, D4 engine with it and i'm sure they will, but maybe not at launch? (They played an similar tactic with the XC90 ten years ago). Volvo are producing some excellent vehicles, and maybe enjoying a renaissance, say similar to the mid nineties, when they launch the 850, T5, which stimulated a rebirth in Swedish cool. But lets face it, who else does a mid range hatchback, not estate, with an all wheel drive capability the looks the dogs....Woof, Woof (thats Lab's speak for high five!) and anybody that wants a premium car, not wanting to succumb to the big three, Audi, BMW, Mercedes then this is just that little bit different, only better. GO VOLVO!

Really like this auto with its far out looks although the colour scheme is far from neutral. Wild! I still prefer 264DL (very practical for family man) although the 780 (Bertone styled yes) was wonderful to be ushered from sauna to sauna whilst listening to ABBA in. You needed to crank up the heat in those days before we melted the artic and also hope you didn't see an elk (they would just go through them...messy, but steering was not always possible).

I don't see the problem of having a diesel without 4 wheel drive. It will never go off road anyways. I do appreciate that the option would be nice to have though, but will that many people buy it?

But as a rival to the X1? I don't think it will be. This car is waaaaay better looking than the X1, so people with taste will buy it lol

Although, it has a whiff of the Rover Streetwise to me....
