Cars in the family hatchback class represent some of the best-selling models on UK roads.
These cars need to be reasonably priced, flexible and practical, and hopefully also offer an element of driving fun for motorists. Our hatchback class crown is still retained by the Volkswagen Golf, with the Ford Focus and Audi A3 falling close behind. Thankfully, deals on all these cars, and many more in this class, can be found by hunting online.

Best new car deals - family hatchbacks
The Volkswagen Golf has sat at the top of our top-five family hatchback list for a long time now. Offers on both the Mk6 and newer Mk7 cars are easy to come by. We found a 2.0-litre TDI hatchback in performance GTD spec, equipped with a DSG gearbox, on UK Car Discount for £25,043 - a saving of £2313 on the list price.
Seat is continuing its offer on the Seat Leon hatchback to upgrade cars in SE and top-spec FR trim with satellite-navigation for free. The upgrade normally costs £1075. Customers looking for Motability models can also drive away certain Leon models without advance payments finance deals.
While it might not be the most satisfying engine to use in the Audi A3 hatchback, the 1.2-litre TFSI is still a capable unit. We found that engine in relatively standard SE trim A3 for £189.59 per month on a 36-month contract. There's an initial payment of £1706.31 and a mileage cap of 10,000, but if you want an economical hatch with badge appeal for as little as possible, this deal from J&R Leasing could be worth looking into.
Chevrolet is currently offering its own new leasing deal on the Cruze. For a deposit of £2,455 and 60 further payments of £179 customers get a 1.6-litre hatchback in LS trim - which grants guide-me-home headlights, ESC, air conditioning and remote central locking. Alternatively, the car can be bought outright for £13,195.
The new Mazda 3 hatchback offers a much-improved experience over the outgoing model, with new gains in ride quality, performance, efficiency and convenience. Introductory discounts on both buying and leasing deals are easy to come by at the moment. Take the offer we found on First Vehicle Leasing, for a 1.6-litre diesel hatchback in base-spec Tamura trim for £243.93 per month as an example. That's on a three-year contract and includes an initial payment of £731.85 and a 10,000 mileage cap.
Deal of the week
The Ford Focus is one of the most popular cars in the UK, and with good reason. With a facelift on the way next year, however, dealers will be keen to get rid of their excess stock. We found a 1.6-litre TDCi ECOnectic hatchback in high-spec Titanium Navigator trim going for £16,339 on Orange Wheels. That's a saving of £4307 from the £20,645 list price.

MK6? The MK7 has been out for a year, are you sure there are any MK6s left?! If there are any left you'd make sure there was a bloody big discount on it...
I don't understand that Leaf deal.
What's the deal with the leaf?
You buy the car and lease the battery - great. But when you decide to sell the car, what happens then? You advertise a used car that has no powerplant or do you have to buy the batteries at the end of the lease period or what?
I can see buying a car + batteries, I can see leasing a car + batteries, but a combination of both! Even with that 50% discount, sounds to me like depreciation will remain a major factor.
Ford Focus deal? Forget it, buy nearly new. Even Ford dealers advertising that titanium (on 13 plate) with under 2000 miles on clock but inc metallic, 18" wheel upgrade, Appearance Pack, Parking assist etc for £14500. That's almost £3000 less than that new car deal on a Titanium nav spec, or £8500 under list !!!!
When it comes to Ford and Vauxhall, even with dealer discounts you'd have to be crazy to buy brand new.
Good Leaf deal with strings attached
To get the Leaf discount which is almost too good to be true - however you do need to own a loan emission vehicle less than 99 to qualify for the discount???
