Next-generation Cayenne will be based on the same platform as the new Audi Q7. An all-electric powertrain could be offered

A development mule for the 2018 Porsche Cayenne has been spotted testing at the Nürburgring following a stint of running near the Alps.

The car is dressed in current-generation Cayenne bodywork, but beneath the familiar exterior sit new underpinnings because this mule is being used to test chassis components and settings.

Earlier development cars have been spotted running inside the Arctic Circle as part of cold weather testing.

Although the mules have all been dressed in current-generation Cayenne bodies, the finished next-generation model is expected to gain a more aggressive front-end treatment and sleeker tail-lights, as seen on the Audi Q5-based Porsche Macan.

Our sources also believe the next-generation model could gain an all-electric powertrain, as previewed by the Mission E, but Porsche has so far remained tight-lipped about the possibility.

Porsche has produced a new range of turbocharged engines for its latest 911 range and our sources suggest much of that technology development will be transferred into the large SUV. Its sister car, the Audi Q7, has recently gained smaller, more efficient engines across its line-up, giving some indication of what could feature in the 2018 Cayenne.

actually, it's a bit more than "based" and a bit more than "platform" - it's the full clone - even the suspension is carry-over with only changes to bush rates, springs and dampers... They've changed the badges too. Yawn.

but isn't a clone of the Q7 one tiny bit. The new Q7 is over 5m long, the facelift Cayenne just over 4.8m.

It does not make any difference if the Cayenne is 20 cms shorter than the Q7 that could be made up by variation in bumpers etc 10cm at each end.the wheelbase can be even altered by 30 cms still same platform look at long wheel base versions on Range Rover,Xj and the new XF when it reaches China.

The new Q7 sits on the LWB version of the MLB platform - the next Cayenne and Touareg will use the SWB version.

I don't think it matters in the slightest that Q7 platform is being used. The Q7 chassis is very good. Why try and re-invent the wheel? As the Macan shows, sharing a platform can deliver a very good car.

Sheehan is wrong. The window line from the b pillar onward is much rounder than the current model. This is not a mule, but in fact the new car.
