Mazda has made its fully-fledged GT race car, the 320bhp Mazda MX-5 GT4, available as a customer car for £150,000. The Japanase maker has seen success with the MX-5 GT4 car, which is developed by Jota Sport and contested the Avon Tyres British GT series.
The GT4 racer is clearly identifiable as an MX-5 but bears little mechanical relation to its more attainable sibling, having a turbocharged 2.0-litre MZR motor, 1000kg kerbweight, fully sequential Hewland gearbox and FIA roll cage, and making substantial use of carbonfibre body panels.
The price does include some technical assistance, but while the car is clearly ready to race, buyers will have to factor in the funds to actually compete on top of the car’s cost. Sam Hignett, managing director at Jota Sport claims that “a full series in GT4 is probably around £200k if you do it on a budget.”
The car will compete with similar offerings from Lotus, Aston Martin and Ginetta. Hignett also added that “the car is an easy car to race and would even suit track day enthusiasts.
"We are still developing the car, but we are now at a point that we can offer this car to customers safe in the knowledge that it is going to be a front runner in any GT4 field. Any team buying the MX-5 GT4 will have a potential winner ready to race”
