Four-month waiting list now in place

The new BMW 5-series has sold out worldwide, with buyers now having to join a four-month waiting list for the car.

“The 5-series is at the core of the BMW brand and we knew it was going to be a very strong vehicle for us," said BMW's sales and marketing director, Ian Robertson.

The new BMW 5-series shares 70 per cent of its technology with the more expensive flagship 7-series, and will be lining up against the new Audi A6 when it arrives next year.

No doubt Jag's press office/Autocar will be along to conjure up some amazing statistic where in an alternative universe - a five hundred yard radius of Gaydon - the XF still outsells 5-series/E-classes combined umpty-times over. Poor bastards, the 2011 A6 just seems like kicking a cripple - most unfair.

Just shows how the country is so strapped for cash etc etc. Great car for certain.

Is it just me, or is that a bit of a daft thing to say? You could say it's selling strongly, there are none in stock and there's now a waiting list (as with many cars). But of course it hasn't 'sold out'.

It could only 'sell out' if production had ceased and BMW had just sold the last one. Crazy ... but presumably a case of Autocar copying some press release wording supplied by BMW. 'Sold out' sounds so much more dramatic...

[/quote]You're right to question bald statements that carry no verification. As Morgan will attest, waiting lists can be artificially organised, and to great benefit for the company, they can carry price hikes!

It's a sell-out because it was the default exec car for yonks!,solid ,comfortable, ok the last car wasn't all that well received when it first appeared, but it sold just the same, so it's not that surprising that the new car coming is sold out, if i could get a really good trade in for my 530i i'd think hard about it!

How can a new car have 'sold out', when in reality there's simply a four-month waiting list? That's not a sell-out.

It's a very strong seller, of course - and there's a waiting list. But my point was that if a car is in production and you have to wait four months for yours to be delivered, how can that be a sell-out? No disrespect to the car - just to the manufacturer for claiming a 'sell out' and to Autocar for using daft wording.

I agree, this is a bit of a non story. I'm having to wait 4 months for an Audi A3, there's a 5 month wait on a Golf and even the Nissan Quashqai has a 4 month wait. So what, it's just a matter of manufacturers controlling stock levels and not over supplying.

Spot on, it's just a press release to add more hype to the car.

SAAB take note.....this is how its done....well done BMW for continuing to make cars people want to buy

25 June 2010

There was a 3 month waiting list for my 159 when I bought it so I guess it must have sold out from launch!!! What rubbish.
