The Mercedes-Maybach sub-brand is expanding to include an open-top luxury cabriolet, which will make its debut at next week's LA motor show

Mercedes-Maybach will unveil its new S 650 Cabriolet at next week's Los Angeles motor show, with the new model likely to enter limited production soon after.

A short video released by Mercedes-Benz on its social media channels reveals the exterior and interior highlights of the new car, which will sit alongside the S600 saloon in the Mercedes-Maybach line-up.

Based on the already luxurious Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet, which was revealed at last year's Frankfurt motor show and went on sale in April, the S650 Cabriolet is expected to have upgraded exterior and interior treatments, as well as extra equipment. While the S 600 saloon uses an extended wheelbase compared to the standard S-Class saloon, however, it appears the S650 will retain the standard Cabriolet's wheelbase.

The S 650's name points towards it having an upgraded twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre V12 engine, perhaps even more potent than that of the Mercedes-AMG S 65, which currently tops the range. The S 65 comes with 621bhp and can sprint from 0-62mph in 4.1sec.

A short description accompanying the S 650 preview video gives a fuel consumption figure of of 23.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 272g/km.

A shot of the car's interior badging suggests that only 300 examples of the car will be made - with many likely to go to international collectors.

Prices have yet to be revealed, but a significant premium over the S 600, which costs from £170,610, is expected.

Exceptional in many ways and never less than good in others; a £165,700 bargain, of sorts

If you want a preview, just imagine a triangular badge on the Mercedes S Convertible. If you want something with proper appeal then look toward a Rolls or Bentley.

Mercedies may not have a brand that rival's Bentley and Rolls until they take control and put their full support behind Austin Martin. Then Germany's takeover of Great Britain will be complete!

It Aston Martin not Austin

It Aston Martin not Austin that was a brand that doesn't resist anymore. Mercedes does need to compete with Bentley & Rolls
