Unveiled at the Beijing motor show earlier this year, the Smart Brabus Fortwo coupé and cabriolet and Brabus Forfour continue a partnership between the Mercedes-Benz owned city car offshoot and renowned German tuning company that was established back in 2004.

A series of subtle exterior styling upgrades distinguish the new Brabus models from their standard siblings. They include a beefed-up front bumper with an extended spoiler, a rear bumper featuring a matt grey diffuser element and chrome tailpipes and standard Brabus alloy wheels.

Power for Smart’s new Brabus models comes from a newly developed version of the Renault-derived turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine featuring a revised air manifold, increased fuel pressure and a Brabus exhaust system with reduced back pressure.

With 107bhp at 5750rpm and 125lb ft at 2000rpm, it kicks out 19bhp more and 26lb ft more torque than the standard version of the compact triple used in lesser versions of the latest Fortwo coupé, Fortwo cabriolet and Forfour. Previous Smart Brabus models used a turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine developing 100bhp and 108lb ft of torque.

Further changes to the drivetrain have been made to Smart’s six-speed dual clutch Twinamic gearbox, which comes as standard on all three new Brabus models. It has shorter ratios and a new race start function and is claimed to have a 40% faster response time thanks to the adoption of revised software.

Smart quotes 0-62mph acceleration of 9.5sec and a limited 103mph top speed for both the two-seat Brabus Fortwo coupé and cabriolet, and a 0-62mph time of 10.5sec and 112mph top speed for the heavier four-seat Brabus Forfour.

Combined cycle fuel consumption is quoted at 62.8mpg for the Brabus Fortwo coupé and 61.4mpg for the Fortwo cabriolet and Brabus Forfour, providing them with respective CO2 figures of 102g/km and 104g/km respectively.

Along with the increased performance, the new range topping Smart models also receive a number of chassis upgrades. Included is a revised speed-sensitive steering system with what Brabus describes as increased return torque for improved self-centering properties.

Inside, buyers get Brabus sports pedals, new seats and plenty of Brabus badging, as well as climate and cruise control. An extra £845 gets you a height adjustable seat and steering wheel, heated and folding door mirrors, rear parking sensors and Smart's infotainment system. Range-topping Xclusive models - a £3170 upgrade - get luxuries including leather seats, a rear-view camera, automatic lights and wipers and a centre armrest.

This will need to be good,

This will need to be good, because in the past they have been cripplingly expensive. The fortwo 90bhp with autobox tops out at over 12k, I guess that the fortwo Brabus will be 15k, forfour a little more
