Our Merc has issues

Mike Duff

It’s good to see that our 1993 Merc E280 has fired up so much debate in the forums, most of it favourable, but unfortunately the car itself has been faring less well.

Merc1 So where to start? It was all going so well: the E-class got its oil changed, had four new tyres and went along to Autoglym in Hertfordshire for a full cosmetic makeover. By the time it emerged it looked factory fresh – and worth at least three times the £1000 we paid for it.

Then the gremlins attacked. First the aftermarket alarm system, which had always had issues, threw a proper wobbly and immobilized the car in a busy supermarket carpark.

Then the central locking failed. And then – worst of all – the heater fan decided to pack up.

The last point being something of an issue as the autumn turned into an early winter – without the fan it was impossible to defrost the car and the journey to work might as well be conducted through the Siberian Tundra.

At which point I called in a professional auto electrician to work his magic. Fixing the central locking took a couple of hours to track down a broken connector – but digging the old heater fan out required the disassembly of the entire wiper mechanism.

Merc2And then the quest to find a new one began. I never thought that tracking down parts for a once popular car could be such a challenge, but it took several days to track down a brand new blower fan.

Finally, after a week of waiting and with the sparky on standby, it arrived and with Christmas-like anticipation I opened the box – only to discover I’d been sent the wrong part (a single rotor fan rather than our climate control-fitted car’s twin rotor.) My response was succinct, predictable and best not published here.

Anyway, I’m really hoping the E-class will be back on the road next week: I’m starting to miss the old girl. And, apart from the heater fan, it’s in tip-top nick. But in the meantime, consider it’s plight a cautionary tale. And wish me luck.

My personal rule of thumb with a banger is strip out any after market equipment that has been put in as 9 times out of 10 it causes problems.  Make good all the wiring afterwards and get to know the car.

Usually I will pick up a banger and spend a Sunday just going over the car fixing anything that looks dodgy.

As for the heater, well not a lot you can do about that - just one of those things.  Call me sad though, there is a certain satisfaction when you have found the correct part.  As you say, a Christmas morning feeling!

Good luck.  Though hopefully it will be fine now. Did Autoglym clean the engine?  Always a bad idea on and old car that works especially if blasted with steam.  Are you going to try to get the climate control working fully again?

Top job though.  I alway miss my old E' class when I've not got it.  It's just so mellow to drive.

A *new* fan.  Did you establish what was wrong with the old one - often it's just the brushes that need replacing?

These are all similar to problems I had with my 1990 190 diesel.  Ebay sellers supplying the wrong parts led to much frustration!

After the autobox started getting jammed in 2nd on a cold start, I spent the £1000 to repair it on a corsa diesel and flogged the merc on ebay.

I did about 45K in that old merc so hopefully you should be alright once the niggly problems are sorted.

It's the risk of old cars. The question is which of the problems you can live with and which need to be fixed, and then how much this is going to cost. If it's more than the value of the car then walk away... That said, I've spent over £1000 fettling a £250 205 GTI that still can't pass an MOT, so emotion can get in the way...

This was pretty much the story with my W124 ownership. I loved it when it worked but the niggling faults ground me down...

never, ever, ever steam clean the engine Mike.

Really bad news. Quick but dirty way of tidying her up.

Clean manualy if you really must using engine degreasing spray and copious amounts of rags, or leave well alone.

Sorry, sort of closing the stable door after the horse has bolted, but for the future.....

It still amazes me how many valet companies still do this when the trade has known for the last 20 years that modern cars do not like being treated like this.

Regards

Gordon
