My top 10 favourite cars; what are yours?

Steve Sutcliffe
During the last 20 years or so in this business I reckon I’ve driven somewhere between 2800 and 3000 cars. So here, in no particular order, are my all time top 10 favourite cars from the last two decades.

PS; I didn’t allow myself to choose the same manufacturer more than once, which was tricky, as you can imagine.

Here goes;

Nissan Micra 1.0 Mk 2
Mahindra Indian Chief
Alfa 155 V6
Westfield SEiGHT
Vauxhall Cors…
Only joking

Right here goes again;

BMW E30 M3
Ferrari F40
Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9
Renault GTA Turbo
Lotus Carlton
Lamborghini Diablo SE30
Caterham R500
Porsche 996 Turbo
Nissan GTR (current model)
Mercedes W140 S-Class; S500

So come on then, what would be your top 10?

Cars I've owned or driven a lot, rather than just tried out:

Mk 1 Cortina

(Here, sticking to 1 per make is difficult because I also very much enjoyed an early 2.8 Granada, some early Escorts and the Sierra)

Vauxhall Cavalier (Mk1, or original or whatever, owned for many years and much missed)

VW Beetle (great in the snow 360° turns anyone?)

Rover 820e (owned for many years, also much missed)

Mercedes 300SE (W124 I think)

Renault 4

Fiat Panda (bought for daughter to learn to drive on.  Great fun to drive - sadly she hated it)

neilbriscoe June 14, 2010 5:44 PM

Well, I've only been doing this for a decade now myself, so perhaps I should just choose a top 5, but stretching my memory goes something like this:

Ford Puma 1.7

Jaguar XJ 2.7 TDVi (2003 'grandad' edition)

Land Rover Discovery 3 (most capable car ever)

BMW E90 M3 (the current V8 one. Awesome)

Rolls-Royce Phantom (the current one)

Series 1 Lotus Elise

Porsche Cayman 2.9 PDK

Gilbern Genie (yes, honestly)

Caterham 7 R400

Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion (current model)

Hang on, that's all European cars. Not a single Japanese or American marque. And me a Honda fan. That can't be right. Hang on, let me have another go...

Difficult stuff - my experience on the exotics is a bit limited and I've not driven as many cars in the last 2 years as I used to. By "best cars" I'm going to take the definition of doing the job they were designed for the best and hopefully something beyond that.

1. Landrover Defender - could any other car be top? Everything it should do in spades, style, character and only a slight rust problem...

2. Ford Mondeo Hatch 2005-2007, 1.8 Zetec uncorrupted by big wheels and heavy engines.

3. BMW 5 Series 525 Saloon, 2000ish vintage. (not the 530 to keep running costs more reasonable...)

4. Volvo 850 Estate R - absolutely mental, but had the disadvantage of having to clean up Labrador vomit after everytime you enjoyed it...

5. Honda Accord Saloon (estate too ugly) 2003-2008, 2.4   EX - handles far better than any FWD saloon should and in my mind still looks good.

6. Rover P5B - apparently this now makes me someone trying to be cool, but not, although it used to be (according to Richard Hammond a few months ago)

7. Lotus Elan - 1967 - I've never driven it, but I want to...

8. Alfa Romeo 159 - I know, I know. It's just that seeing them makes me smile - I love the headlight and front styling and wish Alfa had kept the look for the Mito and other new one... forgotten the name...

9. Range Rover Classic - 'nuff said.

10. Fiat Panda 100hp - relegated to 10th because I can barely fit behind the wheel...

Paddler Ed June 15, 2010 10:51 AM

On the basis that I could only list a manufacturer once my list would consist of 3 manufacturers, and even then it's a bit of sketchy one as they're all linked... Ford, Volvo, Mazda...

So mine's theoretical, and in no particular order.

1.  Toyota Landcruiser Troopie w 4.5 Diesel and ARB lift kit (not that I've seen too many of them in Aus, and have decided that I quite like the look of one!)

2.  Renault Clio Williams (Original one)

3.  VW Transporter Syncro/4Motion (can't decide, but I fancy a T25 Syncro with the locking diffs or a T5 LWB 4Motion)

4.  Audi RS2 Avant

5.  Porsche 911 (993)

6.  Volvo V90 with an engine transplant... the new twin turbo D5 should slot in...

7.  Peugeot 306 GTi-6 or Rallye

8.  Mercedes 300GD

9.  Bentley Arnage

10.  ???

Do all those cars from the VW family count?!  I'd not realised that there'd be an Audi, VW and Porsche in there...

Also do my Van/4x4's count?!

JezyG June 15, 2010 10:59 AM

Peugeot 307 (still one of the best steering setups ever IMO)

Seat Leon MK1 Cupra 1.8T 20V

BMW E46 320d

BMW 118d FL one of the best handling hatchbacks I have driven.

Porsche Boxter scared me to death :o)

Current Ford Focus a great all round package if a bit dull

VW Passast CC 1.8 TSi well made peach of an engine.

Curmudgeon June 15, 2010 11:05 AM

Just like to add one more (well, I didn't really name 10, did I?)

Rover 620 Ti (or was it 600Ti?)

the pits June 15, 2010 11:55 AM

Me? I'd go for:

Lambo Murcielago LP 640

Lambo Countach LP 5000 QV (original, pre-skirt model, without spoiler)

Lancia Integrale Evo II (+ martini graphics)

Lotus Esprit Sport 300

Ferrari 365 Berlinetta Boxer

Ur Quattro 20v

Sierra Cosworth RS 500

Aston Martin DB5

Lotus Exige 260 Cup

Aston Martin V12 Vantage

Nothing front wheel drive nor rear engined would ever make my list.

Sorry, couldn't keep to the 1 per manufacturer rule. And I'm not at all happy about leaving out the AC Cobra, Ford GT, Ford GT40, Lancia Stratos, Ferrari 250 GTO, 288 GTO, Ferrari Daytona, 246 Dino, Lotus 211 or the latest Jaguar XKR ( a decent top ten list in itself!)

Runners up (also in the list on another day):

So Steve, do you currently have some poor intern student who can compile all the results and give an autocar readers top ten? Several cars are repeated by several users, would be interesting. I'm not going to do it though...

Mr£4worth June 15, 2010 6:30 PM

I can only base my comments on what I have owned or driven, so sadly many "favourites" won't make my list.

Here goes;

1. BMW 335I SE Convertible (auto) with all the toys

2. Porsche 356 B Convertible

3. Renault 10 ( I have had 4)

5. Daf 55 Coupe (best handling car ever) previous owner James Bolan

6. Honda Stream 2.0 litre SE Sport - Rapid 7 seater

7. Volvo 240 with Webasto Roof - so comfortable, thirsty & slow an anti-style statement

8. VW scirocco Mkii GTI (40 mpg and you had so much torque gear changing was rarely needed)

9. Cadillac BLS Wagon 150 bhp oilburner (very relaxing- soaks up the bumps)

10. Austin Healey Sprite with Lenham Bonnet (What a shame it was 90% rust)

jl4069 June 15, 2010 8:14 PM

steve,

I find it strange that in recent editorials you are excited about how great new cars are and yet most all of your favorite cars very old. And of course how you never did a comparison of the 996 TT and 997 is beyond me but hey thats why I'm a liberal and your a conservative- the way its always been amongst people.

It sounds like you as a some-what influential editor should be sounding the bells towards makers to get make to the driving pleasures of the old cars you offer us up here.

BTW I agree whole-heartedly with your choices! You have great taste in cars its just that you forget this taste when writing about new ones. J
