Decisions, decisions: Audi RS6 or A3 1.4 TFSI?

Ollie Stallwood
Because Audi is seen as a premium brand it is often easy to forget that, like BMW, it has a huge range of cars these days. And stepping from an RS6 -  Audi’s most expensive car bar the R8 - to its cheapest, the A3 1.4, couldn’t have been a better reminder of that fact.

Not many companies have a 500bhp+ super saloon and a front-wheel drive hatch in their line-up (well, I can think of Vauxhall, but that's not the point).

Audi A3 1.4 TFSI Sportback first drive

I was at an Audi driving day, where it lines up its range of cars for testing. When I arrived a red RS6 was unoccupied so I decided it would be rude not to warm it up.

This is an eye-wateringly rapid car, mainly when you’ve got its considerable weight moving, and it requires immense concentration to thread along country lanes.

In contrast, the A3 1.4 TFSI I grabbed the keys to next is one of the Audi brand’s lowliest models - in fact, four can be bought for the price of one RS6.

What I hadn’t bargained on was that the similarities are immediately obvious. The quality of the plastics is equally impressive in both cars, the design inside and out is elegant and understated, and there is a grown up, resolved feel to each model. Oh, and the ride is too hard on both of them too.

But the real surprise was the way they both drive. Straight out of the box the A3 was nippy, fairly agile and satisfying to stretch on the roads around Warwick. But whereas you have to push it to find the limits, in the RS6 I found myself constantly reeling it in, standing on the unbelievably competent brakes, and holding back its humungous power. This is a car you hold back rather than push.

So with this in mind, which one would I drive home if I had the chance?

The RS6 of course.

... and for all the reasons you give ... I'd take the A3.

Any fool can go fast in a fast car, it takes skill to go fast in a slow car.

Shouldn't they both be badged RS? (As in Reskinned Skoda!)

A harder choice might be between an S3 and an RS6- I wonder what i really would choose out of the two if i took lots of other factors out of the equation- Like the desire of owning an Audi with a Lambo engine and the feel good factor it may bring by owning one, and the sense of occasion you feel starting it up- Maybe based purely on the enjoyment of actually driving it on the road day to day - I might end up preferring an S3

A3 or RS6? Easy - XFR or E63 every time. In fact, the CTS-V would also be ahead of the Audi on my shopping list.

Well, when the RS3 arrives, you will have the best of both worlds...

well, by my side I would take the A3...

... it`s easyer to park, and no one will welcome me to race!

but I would keep the RS6 for fun.

The RS6 is just too competent for its own good and where's the fun in that on everyday roads?

I love Audi estates more than most things. But the RS6 has a "footbally" edge about it.. Not too keen tbh.

Oh and it is definitely the kind of car when one day the nice servicing genleman at Audi will say " that will be £4000 for your 12k mile service sir".

The 1.4 A3 sounds more boring even than our own 2 tdi....

Going back to what Ollie said about how extensive the Audi range is- its hard to take on board engine-wise quite how big it actually is! Alongside their own larger petrol and diesel Audi engines ,they use engines that are in Skoda, VW, Bentley with the W12, Lambo. Can't think of any other marque that covers so many bases.
