Inside the McLaren MP4-12C

Chas Hallett
McLaren may be bracing itself for some criticism of the way the new car looks from the outside – too bland could well be the cry from some quarters.

However I doubt that there’ll be one nasty word to say about the MP4-12C’s cabin because it’s brilliant.

McLaren MP4-12C revealed
- exclusive details, picture gallery and video

I got the chance to climb in one at the company’s HQ a while back. Admittedly it was only an early car, but I came away thinking that it has the interior of any supercar currently on the market - and there’s a good chance I’ll still be saying that when the Macca goes on sale in 2011.

There’s nothing flashy about it, in the way that you can get with Ferrari or Lambo cabins. But it’s extremely classy and very comfortable. Most of the major controls are grouped around you (and vaguely reminiscent of the switches in the McLaren F1) and the bulk of the heating, sat-nav and audio controls all work brilliantly from a central screen in the dash. In fact, think large i-Phone and you won’t go too far wrong.

Getting in is fuss-free too. The dihedral doors slope and away, leaving masses of room to slide yourself in. And when you’re hunkered down in the seats, there’s a pleasing combination of snugness and space. Plus a surprising amount of space to store things.

In short, I wouldn’t be surprised if many Macca owners end up commuting in their cars. Because it’s user-friendly and comfortable enough to do so. You can’t say that about a Lamborghini.

Nice cabin, but its no more restrained or overstyled than a Gallardo's, R8s, Vantage or a 911 - are these cabins now considered brash, overstyled and illogical? And is the race-inspired 458 considered tasteless from just a few pictures? Can't say i'm surprised if that was the case from Autocar because we now have a new McLaren to drool over and be biased towards.

Don't get me wrong, i like the new Macca and hope it's brilliant, but you sense that verdicts already been made by this magazine.

You can apply the same to the interior. And yes it will get alot of criticism. Is it another car that follows the recent trend of looking bad in pics but not reality.

Regarding the outside look- it just doesn't excite me or make me crave to own one.

A McLaren designed to meet a specific market segment and pricepoint goes against the ethos of what most people understand a McLaren to be.

I'm obviously not "most people". Was the F1, or the SLR, designed to cater for all tastes and budgets? Is any car,or any product for that matter?! what exactly does this mean?

The car looks pretty stunning inside and out, the engineering and the quality of build is world class; but the proof will be in the performance and the way it drives in all conditions which will set new standards.

I'd like to know what your definition of flashy is because if I spent 150K I'd want something that looks the part not only on the outside, and this cars bland and generic styling is clearly obvious - a great shame -  but also on the inside. Might be "flashy" to you, but the Italians know how to make a stylish, handcrafted and classy cabin that adds to the sense of occasion. Why else do you buy such a car? You not going to tell me that sombre plain Jane cabin looks better .. each to their own ... it's your 150K ... nice flashy doors btw :)

I think it looks great.  The rear looks very unique.  It does look spacious. All in all I would get this any-day of the week over the usual crop.

Nice cabin

Note to Lotus: This is how to make a simple cabin look elegant.

The MP4-12C's looks very bland and sparse. A bit too minimalist for my taste.

The most interesting and creatively designed current supercar interior? Look no further than Pagani Zonda.

It means that the new McLaren was designed by bean counters via a Powerpoint focus group type meeting (with the view of going for the most lucrative market) and not by out and out racers who would dearly love to build a 21st century McLaren F1. Just imagine what an updated F1 would be like.

Proof come from McLaren themselves when they say they will have up to 10 different models/variants.

People will buy this McLaren but they know in their heart of hearts its not what a McLaren should be.

Very sexy inside and out !

The new McLaren reminds me of how an updated NSX might look and not what a successor to the F1 should be.  The most telling photograph is that of the MP4-12C taken next to its illustrious brother - certainly a faux pas on McLaren's part.  While I am sure they will explain that it is not meant to be a successor and is made based on the realities of today, I for one was expecting (and wanting) more.  Interior wise, I would argue that it is not any sexier than your average Audi, let alone a Ferrari.

While it is certainly not fair to judge the car by appearances alone, the MP4-12C will have to be quite a performer to win the hearts of detractors.  With two more years before it is actually launched, you can hardly say they have been rushed to put it on the market.

I have to say, having worked at Lotus and McLaren I'm not entirely sure I understand what some peoples problems are?

All cars are designed for a specific market in mind, whether that be a Fiesta through to a Zonda. Perhaps the market for the P11 isn't the same as 911 Carrera, perhaps they are aiming at the less in your face buyer who currently has what to buy?? A bogo 911? Not much of a market that, easily enough space to get some buyers.

The interior of most italin supercars is somewhat questionable at the best of times. Perhaps not in style, but in quality. They tend to suffer poor NVH and fall apart far too easily. Also, what taseful cars have in your face interiors??

Ask yourself the question, is the P11 the real successor of the F1? I don't think so, it's not priced the same, hasn't got the same performance and won't be built in the same manor. McLaren themselves have never said it was the successor and they're pricing it against top of the range 911's and the like, not Zonda and Koenigsegg's or even the SLR!

It is a McLaren in every way, dignified, classy, elegant and simple, built to a high quailty and will perform effortlessly. What is more true to McLaren than that?

They aren't TVR!

Anyway, I'm baised, as I'm sure everyone is. I hope McLaren do well with it, it would be a shame not to have some sort of true British supercar.
