The fight to keep our Mazda white

Mike Duff
Before I became custodian of our Mazda 6, I must admit to having had doubts about whether I really wanted to drive around in a white car.

For all the hype a couple of years back about white being set to replace silver as the number one car colour, it's still very much a minority taste unless you either pilot a van or routinely say "hello" three times at the beginning of every sentence. Even after three months in the 6, I still feel like I'm standing out like an iceberg in the fast lane.

That said, I've become a huge fan of the way the 6 looks with its optional Crystal White Pearl Mica. It shows the car's muscular contours off far better than the dark hues that most of its brethren seem to run around in. And, let's face it, I'm never going to lose it in a car park.

But the summer has also revealed an issue with running something this bright and white. However often I clean the Mazda, within a couple of hours the front end always looks like an insect version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This picture was taken after a three-hour motorway run: if I don't clean it for another couple of days, it will pretty much turn red.

Of course, all cars get bombarded by bugs at this time of the year, but the 6 does seem to attract them like nothing else - and there's no hiding the kill tally. If you're considering buying a metallic white car yourself, make sure you factor the extra cost of washing into the equation. I'm on first name terms with the guys who scrub cars at my local supermarket.

I can never understand peoples obssession with keeping cars clean. I think most cars actually look better with a layer of grime on them, shows they are being used and enjoyed.

My car gets its annual wash from the dealer when it gets it annual service.

I want my car to last well, so i wax the most of the body and the alloy wheels once a month to protect them, just like checking the oil and tyre pressures.

If you use your car every day there is not much to be done apart from that.  Agree though, somethng fast and dirty is was sexier than if it was polished to concours standard.

Some cars do not look good in white though,  saw a white XC60 in a supermarket car park yesterday,  I like the car but god it looked crap it in white.

Try having your kids brush their clothes against the car on a daily basis, and then you might understand why it makes life easier for the car to be clean.

You talk about keeping the white body clean, you should try doing it with white wheels too.

In reality, I've given up with that one, but you are right about the bug count.  Best product to get rid of them though comes from Wilkinsons of all places.  Bug remover spray - couldn't live without it now!

Hi!

"My car gets its annual wash from the dealer when it gets it annual service."

cool!

Yep, I`m with you in your opinion!

So the question is... he usually spend some time every year washing the car for... the MOT, just!

By the way, it seams to me that is something like that, because we do not live in UK.

I`m living in another country, Japan, oh hell, this guys are crazy, they even waste time washing Trucks...

For god sake!

Nothing much beautifull than to see a powerfull trunk in Europe, running fast and dirty...

Maybe, we are all missing something... but I prefer keeping with my (our) opinion...

I drive past the car every morning going out of the estate.

It looked like you'd been through an abattoir the other day! My rocco needs a clean too but it's too bloomin hot! I might try the supermarket guys if they're that good :)

Slightly off topic, but I used to have one of the original Fiat Puntos in the bright metallic yellow colour -excite yellow I believe it was called.

To insects and aphids alike it must have resembled a giant flower. If I parked it on a hot day I would return to find it covered in little flies and lady birds with bees buzzing around it excitedly.
