Porsche GT2 v Corvette ZR1 - how the film was made

Jamie Corstorphine
Controversial things drag races. So here's a bit of background info on our latest pairing of the ZR1 and GT2.

Firstly, the number of test tracks in the UK that a) have a suitably long straight and b) allow side by side running is limited. And on this occasion Bruntingthorpe worked best with our schedule. Trouble is Brunters, great though it is, doesn't have the world's best surface for standing starts. If we'd gone to Santa Pod for instance, I reckon there's a good chance both cars (and almost certainly the Vette) would have gone quicker. But we couldn't.

It's also worth knowing how we go about filming these drag races. Although in the finished vid you see one single race, we're a tiny bit more scientific about it.  In this case, before we filmed anything both Matt and I had a go at figuring both cars, and without the weight of Andy the camera man. Then when we were satisfied we'd got the best from both we filmed the race to fit the numbers.

Sorry if that takes away any of the 'magic', but hopefully it gives a better, more representative result, and to the extent possible removes the driver and fluke element from the end result.

There's no doubt that the ZR-1 is fractionally quicker once underway and in gear.  But at Brunters the GT2 gets a cleaner start and requires less time to change gear. And although ZR-1 is quicker, it's not by much, so even after a mile it has only just about caught up.  Another mile and it would have been ahead, but unfortunately also in Leicester.

Nice disclaimer, I think I trust the Motortrend comparo with a seasoned race driver on a variety of surfaces/tracks rather than a couple of cubicle hacks for this kind of (scientific?) testing. Your budget will not allow for a trip to Silverstone; a much more appropriate venue for the cars? I am also sure there are loads of qualified “race” drivers in Europe that would be more than happy to wring the best from each car for little or no pay. Your science is not very good science, just an impression of two (journalists?).

So you cheated, and it shows! This video is nothing like as good as the one for the original 911 v. Corvette feature. Frankly guys, it feels dull. With something like 1000-hp to play with, I would expect something with a bit more punch!

I think you'll find those "hacks" both have racing licences.  Why not accept what is written?

Yeah and George W. Bush has a Harvard MBA; get my point?

thats quite a good point, but my point is that if they did exhaustive testing of both cars with both drivers which they did, then their skill is irrelevant, the porche was still quicker even with the slower driver driving it.

i dont see how you can dispute that result but i'm open to hearing it.

I think when test from other magazines show radically different results, the launch is horrible, you hear the driver run into the limiter in one of the gears, you see other less professionally qualified drivers go faster consistently...it definitely raises more than a few eyebrows.  But hey, maybe it's a legitimate test.  Then again, maybe Iran's election was legitimate.  Or maybe, when one compares 'ring times, autocar is trying to say that the porsche is only good in straight lines whereas the vette can actually handle.

I didn't know FOX news was in the business of car reviews, good work!
