What car am I driving? Here's a few clues...

Steve Sutcliffe
Seems like quite a few of you are on the right track, so to speak, when it comes to guessing what the car is in our latest video. But if you’re still wondering, here are a few more clues.

Watch the video here

It has 620bhp, it weighs 940kg, its top speed is 180mph. Before I was allowed to drive it we had to have quite a long conversation with a man from an insurance company, during which he had to be persuaded that a) I am not a lunatic and b) that his company would hand over £2.5 million pounds if, for some awful reason, I stacked it into the shrubs. Eventually he said yes, which means he is a lunatic as well (although I didn’t, thank the Lord, go anywhere near the undergrowth as it transpired. Which was what you might call a relief.)

When I drove into Chobham town centre in it later in the day, all the traffic, and most of the pedestrians, stopped stone dead in their tracks. Because it’s a road car, not a racing car, although at one time it did compete at Le Mans.

To get the full effect from the video, it’s best to get hold of a pair of earphones and then turn the volume up to max. This may well hurt your ears a bit, but only by doing this will you get an idea of how loud, and how violent, this car feels at 7000rpm. Quite what it must have been like to drive one of these things for one whole day and night I can’t imagine.

And now the rest, as they say, is up to you.

Good luck.

Could it be.. the McLaren F1 LM? :) The colour is a giveaway :p

Ianbr June 25, 2009 12:22 PM

Chobham does happen to be within a couple of miles of the Mclaren Technology Centre

goff June 25, 2009 1:31 PM

It must be a Porsche.  Maybe Porsche gt/ LM prototype?

goff June 25, 2009 1:34 PM

Correction, Yes boys I think your right it's an F1 LM

Green_as_a_hippo June 25, 2009 1:44 PM

Obviously the McLaren. LeMans? Bright Orange? 620bhp? Without a doubt

mjbull@hotmail.com June 25, 2009 1:45 PM

I'd say F1 LM too, but some of the facts don't match...

F1 LM had 627hp, he mentions 620 in the article.. perhaps he rounded down the number?

F1 LM was capable of 240.1mph top speed, with factory fitted gears... and with the limiter removed. The 180mph he mentions is way low, maybe Le Mans gearing?

Official F1 LM weight is 1062kg, not the 940kg mentioned... 940kg was to low for ACO scrutineering in '98, so not sure...

The orange doesn't seem to be quite right, too red IMO...

I look forward to seeing the full video!

38carssofar June 25, 2009 2:31 PM

My guess is it's some sort of American "sports" car...

Peter Cavellini June 25, 2009 2:46 PM

Maybe its a Gummpert?, but what about Mclarens supercar the P1?

Nozwald June 25, 2009 3:52 PM

It's got to be the Mclaren F1 GTR. The F1 LM didn't actually race. The GTR did however in '95 coming home in the first 5 positions I think. And at least one of those GTR's has been converted to road use since.  They were lightened by over 100kg dropping it to aprox the 940kg mentioned. The regulations meant the engine output would be different to the standard F1 so could match the 620bhp and in '95 was recorded topping out at about 180mph down the Mulsanne straight. So seems to fit the brief.

shiakas June 25, 2009 4:57 PM

It has to be the F1 LM. Look at the angle from which the video is taken and were the driver is seating. Unless you can think of another supercar with the drivers seat in the center and two passenger seats at either side

tony8911 June 25, 2009 7:14 PM

1st post for me, and it's the Steve O'Rourke/EMKA Fi GTR that finished  4th at LM in '98. Driven by Steve O'Rourke, Tim Sugden and Bill Auberlen

tony8911 June 25, 2009 7:16 PM

* F1* I meant

laudaf1 June 25, 2009 9:10 PM

My guess is that it's it's a Mclaren F1 GTR converted for road use, painted papaya orange and currently for sale with a certain DK Engineering...

"Here is a few clues?"

Maybe Autocar should create a better impression by using correct English, especially on headline text.

hamishl June 26, 2009 1:33 AM

What about Dauer 962 Le Mans?

hamishl June 26, 2009 1:38 AM

Don't worry, that has too much power

hamishl June 26, 2009 1:44 AM

And I just did a quick Google image search, and the air vents and electronic dash are the same

hamishl June 26, 2009 1:45 AM

As the McLaren F1 GTR. Sorry about all the posts, I've got a headcold.

Hamish is right, Steve is indeed behind the wheel of the Mc F1 GTR. Does anyone know why the racer used what looks like TVR Cerbera mirrors, in place of the production cars smaller, higher-mounted items?

To this day, few supercars have matched, or come close to the MC F1 in ride, handling or even performance terms. Various Koeniggseg's, Ferrari's Enzo and Bugatti's Veyron, beat the brit to sixty and will do in excess of the MC F1's 240 mph but I doubt that any are as well-rounded.

The central seating position and mellifluous wail of the car's fettled BMW V12, visible and audible in Steve's vid., were instant giveaways for me. I look forward to watching the full version in the Autumn :)

Oh and did anyone else check out DK engineering's stocklist, accessible from their website link above? What an eye-watering collection of exotica. That Ferrari 365 GTC looks sublime in dark, metallic blue (from side on it looks remarkably like Volvo's legendary P1800 Coupe) and I love the colour combo. of that silver, Ferrari Dino 246 GTS. I wonder if the mooted spiritual successor to the prancing horse's first mid-engined, mass produced car, will capture as many hearts :)

It's an amazing piece of kit, never to be repeated, mostly because of safety legislation, I doubt that such a light powerful car could be made legal again.

The 0-60 times were recorded at the time with old school tyres, all those years of tyre technology improvements, electronic driver stuff, etc; have made a difference

Peloton25 June 28, 2009 12:52 AM

I posted similar comments with the video:

I think we're looking at Nick Mason's GTR #10R, having been redone in its original presentation livery with the yellow "GTR" logo graphic splashed across the nose and side of the car. Here's an image of that for those who aren't familiar:

img.photobucket.com/.../96gtr_1024.jpg

Another clue giving credibility to this being GTR #10R is the gold dial to the right of the instrument cluster. I'm not certain of its function, but in photos the labels for turning it in different directions say "Front" and "Rear" - perhaps brake bias? The GTR being offered now by DK Engineering (GTR#16R) has no similar dial in this location.

One problem with a comment in Steve's blog about this car:

Steve Sutcliffe:

"...although at one time it did compete at Le Mans."

This car - if it is GTR #10R, and that seems the most likely possibility - never competed at LeMans. It ran only in the practice session at the Pre-Qualifying event for the 1996 24-Hour race wearing race number 53 for the Kokusai Kaihatsu Racing team, setting a lap of 3:54,573. A different 1996 GTR (chassis #11R) was the one that actually competed in the 24-hour event for that team wearing race number 53. So, other than that single practice, to my knowledge and from my records I have no other evidence that GTR #10R was ever raced - and certainly not at LeMans.

The production cars actually didn't use the high mounted mirrors - legislation wouldn't allow it. Only the prototype did used them (I got that from, I think, an official book on the car, so presumably it's true).

Peloton25 July 4, 2009 11:06 PM

You are correct - the original high mirrors had to be scrapped for production due to certain regulatory issues.

However, there are at least 4, possibly 5, production F1 road cars that have been fitted by the factory with high mirrors at their owner's request. The result is visually similar to what the earliest mockup of the F1 wore, however lacks the integrated turn signal. For the mirror itself, McLaren used an off-the-shelf component from the BMW Z1 and reconstructed the a-pillar section of the door frame to strenghten it, and support the mirrors at high speeds.

The chassis numbers of the F1s that wear them are 040, 055, 071 and 074. Chassis 040 is blue and was featured in EVO Magazine more than once. Fashion mogul Ralph Lauren owns chassis 055 and 074 - both cars are silver. He also has one of the LMs, but it wears the standard mirrors. At least one of Ralph's F1 road cars had the mirrors added later by fitting a new set of doors to the car, but I am not certain which one. Finally, for high mirror cars, chassis 071 is the only papaya orange road car, owned since new by a gentleman in Germany.

Here's photos sets I put together of each F1 for reference:

Concerning video of Aston Martin VS GT2 on U-tube:

To Steve;

Rule Britainia, God Save the Queen; England taught the World how to do things for over 600 years. Bring out the HMS Ark Royal.

The AM car drives and looks wonderful.

However, a respectful suggestion from the Colonies, as ZR1, add supercharger or twin turbos. However, there may not be enough space under bonnet. Contact Lingenfelter in hinderlands for suggestions.

PS 1: Was George III from Germany??

PS 2: I have one of those crude 2009 Z06s (Lingenfelter add-ons). I am not as lucky as you to drive one of those fancy ZR1's.
