VW Scirocco: it all becomes clear

John McIlroy

I must admit that I’ve struggled to ‘get’ VW’s reborn Scirocco. It looks a little ungainly in photos, like a Golf that’s been squished during transit, and its mechanical make-up is, well, not different enough from VW’s bread-and-butter-mobile, on paper at least.

But a couple of hours in commute (and a bit of a B-road thrash) have been enough to convince me.

I tried the 2.0-litre turbocharged model with the DGS dual-clutch gearbox, and while I’d ditch the transmission in favour of a regular six-speed stick, the rest of the package made more sense than I’d expected.

The steering has the same finely grained quality that made it such a hit in the Mk5 Golf GTI, the trick adaptive dampers do actually offer two different types of car (for once), and the two-litre lump has plenty of torque and revs cleanly. True, the cabin isn’t quite different enough from a Golf’s for me, but it’s still a very pleasant place to spend time.

All in all, it seems like an attractive buy, offering enough fun and (just about enough) visual appeal to differentiate it from the Golf. And it should prove a rock-solid ownership proposition; I can see why VW will shift thousands.

Yeah, maybe John, but you wouldn't actually spend your money on one though would you now? Come on, be honest. No, you'd wait a year or two and buy a used one. Of course you would, and save a ruddy fortune.Or, if you were really clever, you'd do what I just did. Spend 6000 grand on a mint and beautiful XJS v12 convertible and pull the most gorgeous girls you can immagine and not feel such a *** wasting all that money on crappy little squashed golf, eh John? Tell us the truth for once

Yep, I would definately have the Scirocco I am afraid pig face. Can't think of a nicer car to trundle around in than 20,000 pounds worth of manual 2.0tsi Scirocco. 6000 grand is a lot of money as well, you could have had 3 Veyrons and two Mclaren F1s for that, but then you pay your money and take your choice!

Yeah, I don't don't it will sell..... because its a Volkswagen.  For me though, it's just not different enough from the Golf.  If I buy a coupe, I want it to feel special, either in its looks or the way it drives and this doesn't really cover either of those bases.

I like it.. V curious to know what it feels like driving one.. Driven both a manual and a dsg golf gti and found them a cracker of a car... (still prefer the manual if i m totally honest)..

20k is a lot of money pigface, but its always a relative value talk... Lets compare apples with apples...

as far as the XJS... I think consensus is as a good looking, grandpa-ish coupe that was a bad chassis dynamically from day 1 (and all its variants like Aston DB7 etc) and became eXtremely Junkreliable piece of motoring good only for the Scrapyard  = XJS

A neighbour got a beautiful one though... BRG with beige leathers.. a late one...  He s stripped the whole car electrically and rewired everything.. 10k job... he must love them....

In any case pigface if you d wanted something elegantly stylish for wafting about in 6k (jeez your xjs must be top notch...) one could also get into 100k miler early XKR's nowadays....

Okay okay, maybe I shouldn't compare my sumptuous, refined, beautiful XJS with the frumpy overprived Scirroco as Blacknight et al point out. It's not fair on the Scirroco. But I'ts certainly no old man's car and makes you feel like a young Roger Moore. So that can't be bad now can it!?
