Skoda’s truly Superb

Vicky Parrott

I had my first foray in the new Skoda Superb yesterday, complete with DSG box, and am totally sold on it.

Superb Ok, so it doesn’t handle as well as a Mondeo, but I prefer the Skoda’s interior and I actually think you get more for your money in terms of space and practicality.

And the DSG box? It’s a real shame that the new seven-speed version couldn’t be fitted due to the high torque levels, but it’s still a decent ‘box and suits the big cruiser much better than a manual.

I was particularly impressed with the boot, which was not only huge but also a convenient shape. Even the slightly gimmicky hatch/saloon opening didn’t put me off.

The looks do that instead. To me the rear end looks out of proportion – as though the car was designed to be a foot shorter, but then they wanted to add the cavernous rear leg-room and simply stretched the entire car.

Even that isn’t the Superb’s greatest flaw. That dubious honour falls to its sat-nav system.

You’ll pay £1300 for this option, and yet you don’t get full postcode search – a basic and essential feature that you can get on a £99 TomTom. How is that justifiable in a car that is supposed to be a true executive saloon? It's a petty complaint, maybe, but to me it’s a real glitch in a car that is otherwise brilliant.

So I’ll forgive it the navigating issues and awkward-looking derriere in favour of its brilliant value, comfortable ride and limo-like rear passenger space.

For those reasons, if I were looking for a big, loveable family barge, the Superb would win my hard-earned. Just.

I know it's merely a blog entry but the way Vicky mixes the positive and critical elements of this article without flow makes it unpleasant to read.

Are you totally sold on it or would it "just" win your cash? Is it truly superb or do the looks "put you off"?

ESB - don't know who you are, but I don't think those sorts of comments are justified.

If I were to point back to your post - it's not a good idea to be so critical, and then miss quote, her comment regarding being 'put off' was to do with the practicality of the rear hatch, not its appearance.

Anyway - we're all here to read / comment on cars, not at each other!

The Skoda's sat nav continues to prove that the majority of fitted in dash systems are a waste of time.  I know there are inherent security advantages over a hand held (TomTom style) system but in five years time you won't have a piece of out of date electronics sat in the centre of your dash.

I love this car's practicality and VFM but I simply cannot stomach its exterior looks.

Could the looks be its undoing?

csmith 318 - Erm I don't know who you are either.

And how embarrassing for you to highlight as a misquote, that's right a misquote, not "miss quote", a correct quotation! Look at the first line of the following paragraph after Vicki mentions being put off and you'll see she ties it directly to the appearance of the vehicle.

I'm proud of Autocar's writing standard and don't want to see it slip. I think that's worth standing up for.
