Dreaming up the perfect 911

Jamie Corstorphine

While driving the latest 911 Targa I shared a car with fellow journo (and former colleague) Adam Towler, and we came to the conclusion that as a product designed to appeal to Porsche’s new customers in China and Russia the Targa has to be admired, but not loved.

Targa While Porsche is busy conquering new markets, it shouldn’t forget the enthusiasts. So after some mental doodling, how about this for the perfect (sub GT3) 911: the ‘997’ Clubsport.

It would have the new strengthened 345bhp 3.6-litre engine, two-wheel drive (but possibly in the wider four-wheel drive body), LSD, manual gearbox – or the option of PDK with proper fixed change paddles.

Weight would be down by about 50kg by culling sound insulation and less important trim, and it would get specifically-tuned passive dampers rather than electronically variable ones, a non-switchable sports exhaust.

And, while riding the fantasy spec, how about improved bushing to restore the steering feel of the pre-facelift 911. We’d finish it off with an alcantara steering wheel and gearlever, sports seats and a Clubsport button (to change PSM and ABS settings for track use, quicken the PDK shift and remove the kickdown). Visually it would be finished with a deeper front splitter, small fixed position ducktail rear spoiler and the option of solid colours only.

The price would be sub £70K and, as the company’s sales dip, it could be the perfect way to encourage some showroom traffic. Here’s hoping.

Ahhh, a man after my own heart.  The only issue then comes is how much better would the Cayman be with the same sort of spec!

I've driven a few of them and always thought the absolute basic model on the smallest wheels was the best.  Don't like the wider body - too wide for the UK. I drove an old 911 recently and realised part of the joy was the lack of width.  Tiny little car and the better for it.  Appalling in the rain though.

Way back in 1985 I used to drive a Porsche Carrera sport spec, and if my memory serves me correctly it was a 3.4 ltr. engine.

It didn’t have any of the new fangled suspension and gearbox aids but it did have an excellent limited slip diff.  The whole car shrank around you as soon as you sat in it and I found the only joyous way to drive it was by quite literally grabbing it by the scruff of it’s neck and quite literally throwing it down the road be it wet or dry, it was bliss, total bliss!

But if you drove it down the road quickly but within it’s normal areas of control, my god could it bite you and bite you bloody hard, be that braking or cornering.

If I was going for one now, I would commission PS Autoart http://www.psautoart.com/ to build one exactly to the spec I wanted…………….. dream on

I'm with TegTypeR. If you don't need the rear seats,  a basic Cayman S with a decent diff would be all your dreams come true for a lot less than £50k. No wonder they don't make it...
