Alfa's baby brings back memories

Steve Cropley

I was a raw young hack back in the early ‘70s when the revolutionary Alfasud was new. But I can vividly remember the excitement and speculation it caused. It was entirely new territory for Alfa, which until then had specialised in elegant-but-expensive rear-driven saloons and roadsters.

The ‘Sud was made in a new factory near Naples, an area with no history of car-building, and it featured a flat-four engine turning the front wheels – a powertrain with absolutely no relationship with any other Alfa. It also ditched all others norms in the small front-drive class, and everyone knew it was a mighty risk. They made 560,000 cars between 1972 and 1982, but never made a cent of profit.

This new Alfa Mito supermini, just announced, holds the same kind of excitement for me, but for entirely different reasons. This time, we know the car will work. It uses modern and well proven underpinnings, but its ‘Alfaness’ is in the hands of a newly invigorated team that know it has to make this baby Alfa very different from a Fiat or a Lancia (or a Vauxhall Corsa, which also uses many elements of its chassis).

I trust the Italians to know how to do this. They have already made the Fiat 500 from the Panda, and the Lancia Delta from the Fiat Bravo. Everyone connected with ‘The Cross and Serpent’ — and this includes the UK guys who will sell right-handers here — knows this is Alfa’s best chance at attain sensible sales volume here for at least 20 years, and if they blow it there won’t be another chance.

So I’m expecting big things of the Mito. Like every other long-suffering Alfa enthusiast, I feel I’m owed a success.

I agree Steve, although I am younger than you (34) I loved my Alfa 33 and 147 despite the crappy dealership I had to deal with.  I love this new car's looks, the underpinnings do not bother me too much as long as it drives as well if not better than the Punto / Corsa and if I buy one, the first thing I am going to do is buy a 'Junior' badge in Alfa script and get rid of the utterly stupid MiTo / Mi.To .... what a stupid, stupid name......

Take away the clumsy front and rear graphics, and you're left with a pretty mediocre looking hatchback. As it stands, the Marty Feldman headlamps and grille location, only exacerbate the droopy front overhang problem. I'd still like Alfa to thrive though, so I hope it sells, despite its looks.....

I've always loved Alfas too and have had 6.  Their dealership was jolly handy too - jsut 5 minutes walk from where I work.  However, now that they've streamlined/improved their dealership network the nearest dealer is at least 50 miles away..  So it's no more Alfas for me, sorry.  Pity.  I still love them.

I cannot believe that this body-kit Fiat, 'Alfa' Mi.To, brings Mr. Crpley memories of the great Sud. For any car lover, the Sud was the best FWD car at the time - and for Alfa the best EVER... - and I don't give a ---- about it's commercial success.

The best thing the Sud had was the sensual steering, a virtue now absent from this class (and others) due to the awfull EPS (Electric Power Steering).

Mi.To uses the mediciore Punto chassis; this beancounters choice save development money for Fiat, but it make us stuck with another driver-enemy EPS.

So Fiat will 'make a cent of profit' on the Mi.To - as they do with another style-over-function body-kit 500, but if I can choose between the fun-over-quality Sud and this EPS & MP3 money-maker, I take the same car as the Steve that I remember from CAR days would...
