Fiat 500 launch an "utter shambles"

Will Powell

An “utter shambles” was how one guest described the Fiat 500 UK launch event at the London Eye on Monday evening. Members of the press and invited guests all huddled outside in the cold and rain while a host of celebrities were ushered into the elaborate car launch for Britain’s first taste of Fiat’s new ‘people’s car’.

On the road outside, we spoke to a number of Fiat customers who told us they had been invited along by their local dealership - and had booked central London hotels for the night – but that it now looked unlikely they would get in. It’s an ominous sign from Fiat’s often-criticised UK dealer network, which the company claims has recently radically improved its customer service.

Once the scrum had been sorted out, things started to run more smoothly. The 500 launched inside one of the Eye’s capsules on the stroke of 8pm – exactly 500 hours into 2008.

Meanwhile I found a bar full of champagne-slurping Italians, England rugby legend Lawrence Dallaglio, super model Eva Herzigova, ex-F1 boss Eddie Jordan and Kelly Osbourne – who said she was only there to get a free car. Soft rockers The Feeling and squealing pop star Mika played outside to an audience of invitees at the foot of the Eye. And in the end it did all look as spectacular and glamorous as Fiat’s team will have hoped for.

But although those of us who got in were treated to a free concert, the whole event reeked of celebrity-endorsement overkill. We’re very positive about the new 500 here at Autocar - of course it will become the stylish, I-must-have-one-now fashionable motor of the moment. Deservedly so. Because it feels so good to drive and look at.

But we’re still getting negative letters about Fiat dealerships, often from people who had wanted to buy a 500 and now don’t. And that certainly doesn’t bode well for owning one.

So perhaps the money to throw last night’s bash should have been spent making genuine improvements to Fiat’s customer service? For a start they could stop sending their newest customers to stand in the rain at night outside a party in central London.

Sorry Will, I was there too. Our 1959 Nuova was used in the entrance to the VIP area. I was standing there all the time and NO-ONE complained on that basis. There were several who thought they were VIPs, as they had an email from Virgin radio saying they had won a place in the draw for tickets (does that make you a VIP?), and they were in the wrong queue. If a Fiat customer complained then they didn't read what their invite almost certainly said very well. The invite stated, very clearly, that the launch was at their local dealer, based on their postcode, so it's wishful thinking or they didn't hear when they got the answer. If some people misunderstood, then I don't see that as being Fiat's fault. Given the chaos usually reserved for such occasions, I thought it went extremely well  and the crowd management well handled.

I can't offer any comment on the London unveiling, but for those of us from other parts of the country that couldn't or wouldn't make it down to London, many local dealerships puts on very successful and enjoyable evenings, so I think they deserve an honourable mention.

However I do think that Fiat UK have badly mishandled the launch in respect of UK customers. There was an online 500x500 promotion which offered special edition launch edition cars to the first 500 customers. I was one of them. Guess what I got ... absolutely nothing, except a phone call asking to wait 'till January 2008. Wow, that makes me feel really privileged.

And what of the innovative finance deals whereby you get a free 5 year or 500,000km warranty. Well guess which country isn't offering it .... "Fiat 500 for the people by the people" ... except those who live in an island just off mainland Europe.

Despite my protestations I eagerly await my 500 ... and I do concede that Fiat 500 have been doing a good job of whipping up 500 mania. Hope they can deliver on their promises and make up for these two aforementioned lapses to date.

Will sorry mate but you are way off the mark here. I was at the event and waited outside for a while in the rain (can't blame Fiat for this) There were loads of people outside trying to crash the party and I heard a couple saying their Dealers had invited them. The answer they got back was that the dealers had no involvement in this event as they were all hosting their own launch parties at their dealerships. Who would expect to turn up without a ticket and just get in ?? And if you'd gone to the trouble of booking a central London Hotel then I'd assume you'd check your invite was in your hand before just turning up at the gate. It was a fantastic effort from Fiat and by far the best launch I have been to - although I'm sure you media guys get to see this stuff all the time. Only the you could turn such an event into an opportunity to knock the dealers. I own BMW 650 and a Lexus RX400, my wife and I purchased a new Fiat 500 for our daughter, the service we received from our Fiat dealer was exceptional and when I asked if there was any chance of getting tickets to this party, they went out of their way to help. To describe the event as a shambles is just headline grabbing garbage.

Glad to hear you had a better time than the put out people who approached us on the night. Despite the confusion, I agree it was a very spectacular event and a good marketing exercise.

It’s also great to hear that some Fiat dealers are doing a fine job. But I don’t criticise for the sake of it. We’re still receiving letters from readers who have been turned off the 500 and cancelled deposits because of poor service. We’ll publish another next week.

I’ll add that ‘utter shambles’ were the words of a guest I spoke to, rather than my own ‘headline grabber’. Thanks for sharing your experiences, though.
